Chapter 227
When Alex drove into the Thompson residence alone, Jason and Whitney were just coming back.
When Whitney saw Alex, she looked puzzled and said, “Mr. Warren?”

Alex greeted them, “Jason, Whitney.” Knowing that the Thompson family had a lot of grievances against him and fearing that he would be driven out, he quickly said, “Mrs. Thompson asked me to come.”

Jason nodded and let Alex in. Although no one in the Thompson family except Ellie accepted Alex, Alex insisted, and no one could change his mind. Coupled with Ellie’s current attitude towards Alex, the Thompson family could only let him go for the time being.
Alex arrived at Joanna’s door and encountered Aaron and Ellie. Seeing Alex, Aaron’s face looked really bad.

“Mom has something to talk to you.” Ellie saw that Aaron ignored Alex and awkwardly pushed Alex into Jóanna’s room.
Joanna said, “Close the door.” Hearing Joanna’s reminder, Alex quickly closed the door.
“Mrs. Thompson.” Alex walked to the side of Joanna’s bed.
Joanna had hurt her back and couldn’t get up. She pointed to the chair beside the bed and said, “Sit down.“.
Alex sat down obediently.
“I asked you to come here today to find out how far you have gone with my daughter.” Joanna knew the situation clearly but still asked Alex directly.
Facing Joanna, Alex didn’t hide anything. He said, “Mrs. Thompson, I have already proposed to Ellie, and all we need is a marriage certificate!”
Joanna sighed and didn’t show too much reaction. After a long time, she said again, “What are you going to do when Ellie regains her memory?”
The room fell into a long silence. Alex sat on the chair beside Joanna’s bed, leaned forward, and rested his elbows on his knees.
He was extremely suppressed and lowered his head, making it impossible to see his expression at the moment. After a long time, Alex finally looked up.
He looked at Joanna and said in a humble tone that he had never used before, “Mrs. Thompson, I know that I owe Ellie, Mr. Thompson, and everyone in the Thompson family. I can never repay it in this lifetime!
“I admit that I took advantage of Ellie’s amnesia and used the most despicable and mean tricks to get her back. You can punish me any way you want. Please don’t break us up!
“I have tried countless times to let her go, but I can’t do it!” Alex said all the words that had been suppressed in his heart. For Joanna, he could only be honest. There was no other way.
He added, “All the bad things in the past have happened and cannot be undone. I did all of this just to give myself a chance. I want to spend my whole life making it up to her, loving her, and protecting her!”
By Joanna’s bedside, Alex held Joanna’s hand, and his voice was most choking. His eyes were red at the corners, and he begged in a low voice.

He said, “Mrs. Thompson, I know I have no right to ask you for anything, but I still want to beg you. I really love your daughter. I love her so much. I beg you to help me!”

Joanna turned her head and looked at Alex. She said to him calmly, “Her father’s death should not all be blamed on you. As for you and Ellie, you have come this far, and I can’t stop you. Now, I have only one request.”

Alex slowly let go of Joanna’s hand. He clenched his fists and let them hang by his sides. His heart felt as if it was being tightly grasped by an invisible hand. He lowered his head and took deep breaths, feeling that he was about to suffocate.
In the past, he didn’t understand that he might sooner or later hurt Ellie and cause her an incurable wound. It also left him with a flaw that could never be made up.
It seemed that there was a clue between him and Ellie, but there seemed to be no way to go.
Alex moaned, “Mrs. Thompson, I really can’t do it!”
Joanna said, “If you can’t do it, don’t call me Mrs. Thompson anymore. You can be with my daughter as you like. I can pretend that I haven’t given birth to her. You can take her away, but from now on, you don’t need to come back.”
From the beginning to the end, Joanna’s tone was surprisingly calm. The room was so oppressive that it seemed that even the air had solidified.

“Alex, what on earth did you talk about with my mom?” As soon as Alex emerged, Ellie tossed away the small trowel in her hand and yanked him towards the shade, her voice tinged with curiosity.
“Nothing of great consequence. Just a casual chat about our plan to visit the experts in Yorksure,” Alex replied, his eyes darting about restlessly. He dropped his gaze, concealing the emotions welling up in his eyes, and attempted to sound nonchalant as he spoke to Ellie..
However, Ellie, with her meticulous observation, instantly sense that something was amiss with Alex. She reached out her hand and tenderly caressed his check. Gazing intently into his eyes, she inquired, “Alex, have you been crying just now?”

Alex immediately shook his head in denial. “No, not at all.”
Ellie wasn’t the least bit convinced. “Your eyes are all bloodshot. Bid my mom say something that upset you?”
Alex gently took Ellie’s hand and pulled it down, and then slowly enfolded her in his arms. In a hushed tone, he reassured her, “Truly, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Don’t be anxious, Alex. Once my mom gets better, I’ll have a heart–to–heart talk with her, Aaron, and also my uncle and aunt. They dote on me so much; they’re bound to give their consent to our marriage,” Ellie said earnestly, her voice full of innocence and anticipation.
Listening to Ellie’s words, Alex’s arms around her tightened involuntarily. Closing his eyes, he buried his head in the crook of her neck, and his voice came out muffled. “There’s no rush for marriage. I’m determined to let everyone witness the depth of my love for you.”
Ellie encircled Alex’s trim and strong waist, allowing him to hold her as tightly as he wanted. She responded with a resounding “mm–hmm,” her heart brimming with the certainty of his affection. She had always been acutely aware of his sincerity and never once doubted it.
Suddenly, a fine drizzle began to fall. Ellie gave Alex a little push, saying, “Alex, it’s starting to rain. We should go inside right away. You can have lunch here before you leave.”
“I’d rather skip lunch. Just let me hold you for a while longer,” Alex said. The fine drizzle quickly escalated into a downpour. Alex clung to Ellie as if, with the slightest release of his grip, he would lose her forever. He remained there, reluctant to let go for a long, long time.
