“But I’m not your kind of survivor.” I lifted my chin, meeting Nathaniel’s gaze. “I don’t destroy everything I touch to save myself.”
His finger tightened on the trigger. “Careful, darling. Remember who’s holding the gun.” “You mean like you held one to my father’s head? Or was that too messy for you? Did you prefer watching the poison work its way through my father’s system?”
Through my earpiece, I heard Leo’s sharp intake of breath. He understood what I was doing – keeping Nathaniel talking while his team moved into position.
“Such accusations.” Nathaniel clicked his tongue. “And here I was, trying to give you a chance at redemption. Think about it, Victoria. One press conference, one confession, and all this goes away. You get to keep your baby, your freedom, even your precious Leo’s empire.” “At what cost?” I took another step forward. “My soul? Like you took my parents“?” Jessica’s laugh cut through the night air. “Oh please. Don’t pretend you have any moral high ground here. I saw you that night, Victoria. Saw how quickly you signed those papers once Daddy was dead.”
“You were there?” The realization hit like a physical blow. “Of course you were. Daddy’s perfect little girl, always by his side at the hospital. How long were you working with Nathaniel?”
Her smile faltered slightly. “What are you talking about?”
“The prescriptions, Jessica. The ones that killed my mother. They needed a doctor’s signature, didn’t they? But your father was starting to have doubts. So who better to forge his signature than his own daughter?”
“Shut up!” Jessica’s composure cracked. “You don’t know anything!”
“I know everything.” I pulled the USB drive from my pocket. “Your father kept records, Jessica. Of everything. Including your little visits to his office late at night, accessing his medical credentials.”
Nathaniel’s eyes fixed on the drive. “Hand it over.”
“Why? So you can destroy more evidence? Like you destroyed my mother’s real medical
records?”
“Last chance, Victoria.” His gun shifted slightly, aiming directly at my heart now. “The drive, or I start with you and work my way through everyone you love.”
I held up the drive, moonlight glinting off its metal surface. “You want it? Come get it. “Boss,” Sofia’s voice crackled in my ear. “Teams in position. Waiting for your signal. Nathaniel took a step forward, then another. Behind him, I saw shadows moving – Leo’s men getting into position. Just a few more seconds…
“You know what your biggest mistake was?” I asked softly.
“Enlighten me.” His fingers reached for the drive.
“Teaching me how to nlay your name ” I smiled and for the first time I saw uncertainty

“Teaching me how to play your game.” I smiled, and for the first time, I saw uncertainty
flicker in his eyes. “Now, Leo!”
The world exploded into action. Leo’s teams emerged from the shadows, weapons raised. Jessica screamed as she was tackled to the ground. But Nathaniel was faster than anyone.
expected.
His hand closed around my wrist, yanking me against him. The gun pressed under my chin
as he backed us toward his car.
“Nobody moves!” he shouted. “Or the grieving widow becomes a tragic headline.”
“Let her go, Nathaniel.” Leo’s voice carried across the lawn, deadly calm. “You’re
surrounded.”
“Am I?” Nathaniel’s laugh held an edge of madness. “Check your phone, Leo. See what’s
happening to your precious empire right now.”
‘My phone buzzed in my pocket. Through the fabric, I felt the distinct pattern Sofia and I had arranged – three short vibrations. The signal that everything was in place.
“You still don’t get it, do you?” I said quietly. “You’re so busy playing chess, you forgot to
count the pieces.”
“What are you babbling about?”
“That USB drive you want so badly? It’s a fake. The real one was uploaded to every major news outlet ten minutes ago. Along with a very interesting video of you and Jessica discussing
my mother’s treatment plan.”
His grip tightened painfully. “You’re lying.”
“Check your phone,” I mimicked his earlier taunt. “See what’s happening to your precious
reputation right now.”
The gun trembled against my skin as he fumbled for his phone with his free hand. I heard his sharp intake of breath as he saw the headlines already spreading across social media.
“You see, Nathaniel,” I continued, “while you were so focused on destroying me, you forgot
one thing.”
“And what’s that?” His voice was barely a whisper.
I met Leo’s eyes across the lawn, saw him nod slightly. “I learned from the best.” Everything happened at once. I drove my elbow back into Nathaniel’s solar plexus, just as Sofia had taught me. As he doubled over, Leo’s shot rang out – precise, controlled, striking
exactly where he’d aimed.
Nathaniel screamed as the bullet shattered his kneecap. The gun clattered from his grip as he fell, clutching his leg.
I stepped away from him, my heart pounding but my voice steady. “That was for my father.” Leo’s men swarmed forward, securing Nathaniel and Jessica. Through my earpiece, I heard
