Chapter 29: Her Savlor

JULIA

Well, he was actually worse than the rapperthe clownat the priest. In fact, I would date all those three men at the same time if it meant getting away from David

However, I was too out of It

The fog in my mind was thick like I was swimming through a mudflat. Still, I felt the chill of the night air biting at my skin

My body slumped over David’s shoulder as he carried me out of the restaurant, muttering under his breath like the lunatic that he was

Unbelievable,he grumbled. I paid for the meal. I was a gentleman. And you wouldn’t even give me a chance to take you home? This is why there can never be nice guys. They are always taken advantage of.”

The words cut through the fog clouding my head. My fingers twitched against his back

This is why you’ve been single for so long,he continued, clicking his tongue as he adjusted my weight. You’re a complete prude.”

We passed by a couple, and I tried hard to speak, but David kept me still. How’s it going?he asked, having the nerve to strike a casual conversation

As expected, the couple did not notice anything

I tried to move, tried to resist, but every muscle in my limbs felt like it was made of heavy metal

He was about to lead me to his car, and that was when horror filled my veins

No.

No. I wasn’t going to let this happen

With a surge of adrenaline, I thrashed my shoulder against him, sending him off balance for a moment. Getoff

My voice was slurred, barely more than a breath, but it was enough to startle him

What the

He stumbled, his grip loosening. I slipped off his shoulder and hit the ground with a loud thud

Pain shot up my knees, but the sudden impact cleared a sliver of the fog from my mind. My palms scraped against the pavement as I tried to push myself up. My chest heaved, the cold air burning my throat as I forced myself to breathe

What the hell are you doing?!David hissed, bending over to grab my arm. Stop being so difficult! You should be thankful that I’m even giving you a chance!”

I wrenched my arm away, my strength surprising both of us. His eyes widened, a sense of uncertainty flashing over them

Whatthe hell?he muttered, his grip faltering as I shoved him backward. Why are you so strong?!”

The hazy edges of my vision pulsed as I staggered to my feet. My legs shook beneath me, but I planted myself firmly, squaring my shoulders, Don’ttouch me, you ugly bastard.”

David’s lips curled into a snarl. You’re just making this harder on yourself. He lunged forward, grabbing my wrists and pinning me back against the side of the building

Let go of me!I kicked at his shin, feeling the impact through my leg. He cursed loudly but held on tighter, pressing his weight against me

Stop fighting!he growled, his face Inches from mine. 11 breath was hot and sour, and I felt bile rise in my Throat. You’re ruining everything!!

Panic clawed at my chest, but I didn’t stop struggling. I bucked against him, twisting my arms, scratching at his hands, anything to get him off me

But he was strong, and my strengthwhatever strange surge I’d had was fading fast

Fine,he snapped, reaching into his coat pocket with one hand while keeping me pinned with the other. You want to make this harder? Let’s just get it over with.”

I barely had time to process the movement before I felt the cold rim of a bottle press against my lips

No!I shouted, thrashing my head to the side, but he was persistent. His grip tightened, his free hand forcing my jaw open. The liquid poured into my mouth, bitter and burning, seeping down my throat before I could spit it

out

Almost immediately, that strange heat returned, crawling through my veins like poison

My limbs felt weaker, my body heavier, and the fog around my mind grew thicker and darker

For some reason, this feeling was familiar. I was sure I had never felt it before, but it was therea lone memory

David smirked down at me, his face a sick blur through my fading vision. There we go. That’s better.”

I tried to fight it

I had to fight it

But the more I resisted, the faster my body failed me. My knees buckled, my head slumped forward, and David’s cruel laugh echoed in my ears

It’s easier when you don’t fight, you know,he muttered. Now, now. Follow me like a good girl, don’t you?”

I didn’t know when or how, but something inside me began to crumble

This wasn’t happening

I squeezed my eyes shut, tears burning behind my lids as I sank into the dark, giving up, letting go-

And then I felt it

A sudden jolt. A forceful shove

David’s weight disappeared from me in an instant. I hit the ground hard, with my my head spinning and my body aching

Somewhere in the haze, I heard a sickening crack. Then another

A voiceDavid’s voicescreamed out in agony. Whatwho-The sound cut off abruptly with a strangled choke

The world was spinning, disjointed flashes of light and movement blurring together, as I lay, slumped on the cold ground. I couldn’t see anything clearly, but I felt it. A presence

And then there was warmth

Familiar warmth

I was being lifted, cradled in strong arms, my head resting against a firm chest. My body, though heavy and unresponsive, instinctively relaxed into the embrace

It wasn’t anything like David’s

Through the fog, I managed to open my eyes just enough to see the faint outline of a face. It was blurry, distorted by my fading vision, but the silhouette was unmistakable. My heart stuttered weakly in my chest

Evan,1 mumbled

A low click of the tongue reached my ears, followed by a familiar, exasperated voice. I told you not to call me that.”
