Chapter 28
I stared at him, my eyes wide open in disbelief. This was only the second time we’d met.
He seemed unfazed by my surprise, pushing me along while speaking softly, “My name is Ivan Shannon, the attending physician here. I earn 7 thousand dollars a month, and my provident fund is enough to cover my mortgage. How about giving me a chance?”
I finally came to my senses and looked at him. “Are you joking?”
He smiled. “No, I’m serious.”
I was left speechless.
He clearly wasn’t going to let this go. Instead, he pulled out his phone and said, “Charlene, let’s add each other on WhatsApp.”
I was about to refuse when he added, “By the way, I heard your brother is about to have surgery. I know a very skilled brain specialist—”
I wasn’t sure how he got that information, but his words made me hesitate.
My brother was always my soft spot.
I took out my phone. “Should I add you?”
“I’ll add you,” he said, clearly pleased with himself as he smiled with his eyes slightly squinted.
I didn’t respond. After adding each other, he continued to push me along.
When we turned the corner on the third floor, I saw Harlan.
He stood in the shadow, his gaze dark as he watched me. Upon seeing Ivan behind me, his eyes filled with mockery.
“I was going to come get you, but now it seems unnecessary,” he said with a sneer.
I ignored his sarcastic comment and turned to Ivan, thanking him. “I’ve arrived. You can go take care of your business.”
Ivan glanced at me. “I’ll arrange a CT scan for you. That fall looked pretty bad.”
Before I could respond, I saw Harlan furrow his brow and ask, “What happened to you?”
I didn’t answer him. Instead, I turned to Ivan and said, “It’s fine. I’m really okay.”
Ivan still seemed a bit concerned and asked me a few more questions before leaving.
I watched him walk away, narrowing my eyes slightly.
How did he know about my brother’s situation?
Had he been investigating me?
“What’s this? Can’t bear to part with him? Still watching after he’s gone?” A voice came from beside me.
I looked up to see Harlan, his expression full of ridicule. “You caused Tamara’s car accident, and yet here you are, in the mood to talk about
romance.
His words were mean. I didn’t want to hear them, so I coolly retorted, “How is Tamara’s car accident my fault? You think I ran her over?”
He paused slightly, seemingly unaccustomed to my biting tone. It seemed rare for him to hear me speak like this, and for a moment, he didn’t know how to respond.
I understood–before Tamara came back, I had always been obedient to Harlan.
He didn’t say anything more, instead pushing me into Room 307.
When the door opened, I saw Tamara.
Her arm was wrapped in bandages, and her eyes were still red, looking pitiful–like a scared little rabbit.
1 suddenly understood why Harlan loved her so much.
This fragile, pitiful appearance of hers really did appeal to men.
When she saw me, Tamara immediately started her act, tears falling without warning. Her voice trembled as she cried, “Harlan, I told you, I don’t want her here.”

Harlan released my wheelchair and sat beside Tamara, soothing her gently, “Come on. How about I have Charlene apologize to you?”
Hearing that, I felt disgust deep in my heart.
I looked at Tamara and asked, “So, you’re saying the car accident happened because of me, right?”
Tamara flinched, seemingly afraid of me.
