Harlan’s eyes sparkled with a hint of pleasure. He didn’t say a word, but his gaze made me so awkward I felt like I could dig a hole big enough to bury myself.
With Harlan’s help, Shane’s transfer to another hospital went smoothly. By the time everything was done, it was only 7 p.m.
I bought Shane some beef burgers. After he finished eating, he didn’t stay awake for long and fell asleep again.
I stayed with him for a while and then went to find Elliot.
Elliot said that the focus for Shane in the next few days would be medication and examinations, and he asked me to pay some money first.
I only had 65 thousand dollars, so I paid that amount.
After draining all the money from my card, I thought for a long time but still didn’t know where to borrow more money.
My dad was a gambling addict who had borrowed money from all our relatives years ago. If I went to them for help, no one would pay any attention to me.
I was feeling annoyed. After getting in Harlan’s car, these things were still on my mind.
I casually glanced at him, and he seemed to want to say something but held back.
I didn’t take the initiative to ask until the car stopped in front of a restaurant, and I heard him ask, “You’re really short on money, aren’t you?”
I made a sound of agreement. He suddenly leaned over, his gaze falling straight on me.
The familiar scent filled my nose, and my heartbeat involuntarily quickened. I wondered what Harlan was up to. I thought he might be going to lend me money.
As soon as this thought crossed my mind, I heard him say maliciously, “Charlene, I’ll cover the medical expenses you’re short on. How about becoming my lover?”
Just as I had expected, I lowered my eyes, feeling I shouldn’t have had any expectations of Harlan.
He was malicious and petty, holding a grudge against my refusal to be his lover, so he seized the opportunity to humiliate me.
But I happened to need that money very much.
I kept quiet for a long time, which seemed to tick Harlan off. He said sarcastically, “You’re not still thinking about asking Ashton for help, are you? Fraser froze his card, and he is now too busy to take care of himself.
I fell silent, the last sliver of hope in my heart crushed.
It seemed that there was no other way except to agree to Harlan’s request.
I looked up at him and said, “I told you, I won’t be a lover.”
He looked at me in disbelief and asked, “You don’t want the money anymore?”
I let out a light laugh and answered, “Mr. Shannon, there’s more than one rich guy in this world. Since I have to sleep with someone anyway, why can’t I choose someone else?”
Harlan’s face suddenly darkened, and he said, “Charlene, how dare you?!”
“What’s there for me not to dare?” I said indifferently.
He took a deep breath and gritted his teeth, saying, “You’re the deputy director of my company. I don’t want to hear any rumors about you being a mistress from others!”
I smiled and said, “Wouldn’t being your lover make me a mistress?”
He paused for a moment before responding. “Tamara and I are not together.”
Hearing this, I slightly frowned, doubting the truth of what he said.
He ignored my surprise and continued, “You know my mom doesn’t like Tamara.”
I indeed knew that. If it weren’t for this, Tamara wouldn’t have gone abroad to study back then.

He said, “My mom wants me to enter into an arranged marriage, but I don’t want to. That’s why I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend and help me get through this.”
He said it was just to get through it, but I guessed I would probably get scolded by his family.
But I wasn’t against it, so I asked, “How long will it last?”
“For a month,” he said indifferently.
It was just a month in exchange for my brother’s medical expenses. It would not be a loss.
