Amidst the chorus of persuasion, I glanced at Mia. Her eyes were filled with disbelief. But then, with a hint of impatience, she frowned and asked, “You’re going abroad?”
Her voice was tinged with agitation. “Why didn’t you discuss this with me? Let me make this clear. I don’t want a long–distance relationship.” With that, she pouted and turned her head away.
But my mom and the relatives all widened their eyes in astonishment. I hadn’t told Mia about the big news!
After my mom realized it, she comforted Mia and then walked over to me, her voice stern. “Zane! You didn’t tell Mia about this big news? What kind of boyfriend are you? Our family has principles, and we don’t do immoral things. If you dare to hurt Mia, I won’t forgive you!”
My parents had always been a loving couple, so my mom believed that if I was serious about Mia, I should treat her with all my heart.
My mom pushed me towards Mia, urging me to appease her. But I impatiently broke free. There was no way I would do that. The relatives also tried to persuade me like before.
I couldn’t take it anymore and didn’t want to keep it secret. It was better to clear things up with everyone today. “I don’t plan to marry Mia. I’m going to break up with her.” The noisy room fell silent in an instant, and Mia turned her head to look at me in disbelief.
My mom was the first to speak, “Did you have a fight? If so, just resolve it properly and apologize to Mia.” Then she had the relatives leave, giving Mia and me some private space.
After they all left, I spread my hands helplessly and said, “I have nothing else to say.”
I got up and was about to leave. But Mia called out to me, “Aren’t you going to explain yourself?”
“There’s nothing to explain. I meant what I said.” With that, I walked out of the private room without looking back.
Mia picked up her bag and hurried after me. I walked quickly, and she had to almost jog to keep pace with me. “Why? Is it still because of Lucas? I’ve already explained to you! The marriage license is fake! Fake! Don’t you get it?”

I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye and gave her a disdainful look. “Well, so what if it’s fake? Why should I care?” She seemed both annoyed and amused and grabbed my hand, bringing us to a stop.
Then she sighed helplessly, “You’re my boyfriend. Of course you should care. Zane, I understand how you feel. I’ve thought about it from your perspective. I really was just helping Lucas deceive his parents. But don’t you think you’re also in the wrong? No matter how angry you are, you shouldn’t have asked to break up with me! And you didn’t tell me about going abroad! What do you take me for?”
She caught her breath and continued, “Also, I don’t agree with you going abroad. Your mom said we’ve been together for so many years, and it’s time to get married. I can’t accept a long–distance relationship.” She blurted it out in one breath and waited for my response.
So she was aware that we had been together for so many years after all. I lowered my head and let out a soft chuckle. But over these years, only I had tried hard to maintain our relationship, while she had done plenty for Lucas, yet nothing for me.
Then I said calmly, “Can’t accept it? That’s easy. Let’s break up.”
Mia lost her patience again and shouted at me, “Okay! Break up! You just won’t give up the thought, will you?” She folded her arms across her chest, extremely impatient. We stood there in a standoff for nearly a minute.
“Alright. Let’s talk about it at home,” she said, frowning. She gave me a gentle push to get me moving, and without hesitation, I followed her
home.
