This time, he left in such a hurry that he didn’t even wait for me to finish speaking.
Chapter 9
In the days that followed, Blake often called me, but I never once picked up.
Later, he started writing to me through various channels.
Sometimes, children who didn’t know better would read his letters to me.
He said he had fallen in love with me long ago, deeply, though unaware.
He said that every day without seeing me, he couldn’t sleep, that I had already become a part of him, as essential as his own bones.
I listened to his ramblings.
At first, I would have the children respond to him, telling him to stop bothering me and that there was no hope left between us.
Eventually, I just moved away.
I took a flight again, feeling unsettled. So, I relocated to Blake’s rival’s territory.
I thought this would give me peace.
But a year later, I still went to see Blake at his funeral.
“I didn’t expect Mr. Harris to pass away so young.”
“Who could’ve predicted it? A year ago, Blake seemed to go mad, seeking revenge on everyone!”
“I heard it was because of his girlfriend, Megan.”
Everyone was lamenting his feelings for Megan.
But only I knew that the place where he died was not far from my villa.
“Caroline… Ms. Ward.”
I turned around and saw Zachary standing not far off, waving at me.
Once inside, he handed me a box, his eyes red.
“The truth is, that night Blake wanted to see you one last time. But on the way, he realized someone was following him, and that’s when…”
I bit my lip. “I’m sorry for your loss.”
“Caroline, Blake knew he wronged you. All of this, everything he left behind, is for you. He’s entrusted all his assets to you.
“Before he died, he told me to give you a message.
“He begged you. He begged you not to hate him.”
With those words, Zachary broke down in tears.
I didn’t respond to him that day, even as 1 left Blake’s funeral.
But I couldn’t stop hating him. After all, he had buried my youth.
So, I donated all of Blake’s assets to charity.
Then, I went back to school, pursuing my PhD.
Everything became a fresh beginning.
