Our relationship has eased quite a bit.
The most direct manifestation is that Lucas has become more “fierce.”
Although our frequency wasn’t low before, he’s clearly been putting in more effort lately.
Apart from that, I still cherish this time.
If it weren’t for those complicated romantic entanglements.
He would at least be a competent brother.
Life is always full of surprises.
After enduring for so long, we’re finally approaching my birthday.
That day, I went out to buy some things we’d need for our trip abroad. On the way, I had a headache attack and was hit by an electric bicycle.
I curled up on the ground, pale–faced. The driver was frightened and wanted to call an ambulance for me, but I stopped him and dialed Ryan’s
number instead.
He should have been off duty today.
Ryan arrived quickly. He picked me up from the ground as I was convulsing in pain, put me in the car, and gave me a sedative.
I slowly recovered and even had the spirit to joke with him, “When I die, I must leave half of my inheritance to you. You’re more devoted than my boyfriend.”
He spared a moment from his busy schedule to glare at me, “Who wants your inheritance?”
“Then what do you want? I don’t have much to offer.”
He thought for a moment, “Cook me a meal. To be honest, I initially pursued you because your cooking was so good.”
“Oh.”
I’ve cooked for Lucas for so many years and he never fell in love with me.
We went to the market to buy ingredients. With a grateful heart, I prepared to show off my skills.
Ryan was originally leaning against the kitchen door watching me leisurely, but I called him in to help.
Halfway through cooking, Lucas called me, “What’s going on? Someone from the company said they saw you get hit on the road today?”

Halfway through cooking, Lucas called me, “What’s going on? Someone from the company said they saw you get hit on the road today?”
I was stunned for a moment, not expecting him to know, “Just a small accident, nothing serious.”
He took a deep breath, “Where are you now?”
Ryan handed me the cleaned shrimp, “I’ve removed the veins and heads. If I knew it was this troublesome, I would have just bought peeled shrimp.”
Lucas heard his voice and fell silent.
I had to say, “Ryan helped me, I’m at his place cooking for him.”
“Seems like nothing’s wrong then.” He spoke in a deep voice and hung up the phone.
Ryan and I exchanged a glance.
He shrugged.
At night.
Lucas came home very late.
I happily bounced in front of him, handing him the warmed milk, “When are we going to Norway? I need to book the flight tickets.”
Lucas looked up at me. He didn’t take the milk, nor did he speak.
In this silence, I seemed to have a premonition.
Sure enough.
He lowered his gaze, “I’m sorry, there’s a tricky project in England that our company has taken on. I must personally be there to participate. From the start of the project to its completion, it will take at least half a year.”
I unconsciously gripped the cup tightly.
In the past… of course I would have understood.
Work comes first, career is the priority.
I understand this principle.
I am very willful.
But I’ve never interfered with his important matters.
“…Can it be postponed a bit? We won’t stay in Norway for long anyway.” I said somewhat blankly, even with a hint of pleading.
Perhaps surprised by my persistence, he glanced at me, “We’ll go next year, you can stay as long as you want then.”
After a long while, I made a sound of agreement.
But there won’t be another chance.
He probably felt a bit guilty. In bed, with my back to him, Lucas embraced me from behind, placing soft kisses on my neck and shoulders.
I didn’t respond, but he wasn’t angry. He slowly kissed me, even kissing each of my fingers one by one. It started off ticklish, but gradually
became fierce.
We wouldn’t see each other for five months, it was as if he wanted to make up for it all at once.
The next morning.

Lucas said goodbye to me, “I’ll try to come back when I can.”
After saying that, he prepared to leave.
I said, “Aren’t you going to hug me?”
He hesitated for half a second and leaned in towards me.
Zoe poked her head out of the car, “Boss, it’s time to go.”
Lucas’s movement paused. Right, he’s always been reluctant to show affection towards me in front of others.
He looked at me, “Wait for me to come back.”
Then he turned and walked towards Zoe.
I habitually started counting.
One step.
Two steps.
Three steps… ten steps, he didn’t look back.
In the past, I always hoped he would turn back to look at me, even just once, at least to show he was reluctant to leave me.
But unfortunately, this time was no exception.
