The next second, Jacob lunged at me like a madman and shoved me to the ground as he roared, “It was you! Wanda, you jealous witch! You couldn’t stand to see my daughter win, so you took her!”
Fortunately, I had anticipated his reaction. With a swift glance to the side, a team of security guards rushed forward. They stepped between us to shield me.
I steadied myself and replied coldly, “Jacob, can you calm down for a moment? My daughter and I have been here the entire time. When would we have had the chance to take your daughter?“}
Just then, Cassie arrived in a hurry. She froze upon hearing my words.
“She’s right. They’ve been here the whole time.” Her voice was trembling, tears welling in her eyes. “Then who took Becca? Husband, what do we do? If anything happens to Becca, I don’t want to live anymore!“}
Cassie broke down in tears, while Jacob spun in circles. They were completely at a loss. At that moment, Jacob’s phone rang.2 As if grasping at a lifeline, he answered it immediately and barked, “Who is this? Release my daughter!“}
However, what he heard from the other end was not what he expected. It was Lily, the daughter they had locked away at home.” Lily stammered, “Dad, Mom, why do you love my sister so much but treat me like I don’t exist? You hit me, ignore me… I don’t want a sister anymore ….”
Jacob’s face turned purple with rage when he heard her. His voice thundered through the phone, “You ungrateful brat! Your mother and I worked so hard to raise you and this is how you repay us?“}
“Let Becca go right now, or I swear I will disown you!” he threatened.}
There was a long silence on the other end before Lily’s voice returned. It was eerily calm. “You never saw me as your real daughter anyway. Eighteen years ago, you abandoned me at an orphanage and never looked back. I waited for you for years, but all I got in return was this kind of treatment.”
“If you don’t want me, then you don’t get to have Becca either,” she added.
The line crackled as if she were rummaging through something. Then, a blood–curdling scream tore through the phone was Becca’s
scream.
The sounds of struggle echoed for a few moments before everything fell into an eerie silence.
Jacob and Cassie screamed in horror, “No!”
However, Lily seemed unfazed. Her voice was ice–cold as she said, “Since you hate me so much, I’ll return this body to you.” A loud thud of something falling followed.
The room fell into a deathly quiet and both Jacob and Cassie collapsed to the ground. They were wailing like madmen.
“Call the police! Call an ambulance! Call the emergency number! Save Becca!“}
However, it was a pity that by the time emergency responders arrived, it was too late. They only found two lifeless bodies.
I let out a sigh when I heard the news.
In the days that followed, I occasionally caught glimpses of Jacob and Cassie on the streets. Or rather, I saw what was left of them. Jacob’s once–arrogant posture had withered, his steps were unsteady and his face hollow. Meanwhile, Cassie wandered aimlessly, with matted hair and her eyes were blank.#
They were mere husks of the people they had once been. They were drifting through the world like lost souls.
A month later, a neighbor whispered to me in a hushed voice.@
“Did you hear? Jacob and Cassie jumped off a cliff. Their bodies were so mangled you couldn’t even recognize them.“>
I sighed again upon hearing the news.#
Thinking back to how they had schemed and deceived for their own gain, I never would have imagined that fate would deal with them such a cruel hand in return
