Chapter 10
The sight before me sent a violent shock through my mind, numbing my
senses.
But I had no time to think.
I lunged forward like a madman, dropping to my knees as I gathered my mother in my arms.
Her body was limp and cold.
I shook her, calling her name over and over, my voice raw with desperation.
But no matter how I pleaded or my voice cracked, she never responded.
She was gone.
My mother was dead.
Her death was brutal and cruel, yet on her face lingered the faintest trace of a smile, barely visible.
The first thing I did was call Merrick.
Minutes later, the wailing of sirens tore through the silence, growing louder as they approached.
Merrick arrived with his team, questioning me and scouring the house for
evidence.
Then, they took my mother’s body away.
Hours later, I stood at the police station, facing the forensic doctor as he
delivered his final verdict.
“Based on our investigation of the scene and the autopsy results, the deceased appears to have died by suicide.”
The words barely registered before my mouth moved on its own.
“Impossible.”
“My mom was frantic when she pushed me into that passage. She knew something was coming.”
“She had no reason to kill herself!”
If my mother had taken her own life, then why had she been so desperate to make me run?
Why had her voice carried such urgency, such fear?
Merrick was silent momentarily, then spoke in a careful, measured tone.

“The deaths of your father and Lincoln caused a huge stir. Maybe your mother couldn’t handle the weight of public scrutiny. Maybe this was the only way out she saw.”
“She told you to run. Perhaps she just didn’t want you to witness her final
moments.”
His words made my stomach twist, but I shook my head, rejecting them
outright.
“That’s not possible.”
“My mother was never the type to break under pressure. She never let people’s words dictate her life.”
“Even after everything that happened, she carried on as if nothing could shake her. How could she suddenly take her own life over this?”
“Look into it again. This is not that simple.”
“My mom was murdered.”
The more I spoke, the more the fury inside me swelled, my voice trembling
with emotion.
First, my father.
Then Lincoln.
And now my mother.
One by one, the people closest to me were being taken.
And none of it made sense.
Terror gripped me, sinking its claws deep into my soul.
I didn’t know how long this invisible fear would linger, haunting my every
breath.
But I had had enough.
Seeing that I was on the verge of breaking down, Merrick tried to console me, his voice steady yet distant, as if even he wasn’t sure how to ease the weight–crushing me.
He pressed the forensic team for another reexamination, urging them to dig deeper, to search for anything they might have missed.
But no matter how many times they went over the evidence, the result never changed–suicide.
It was final. It was settled.

I laid her ashes beside my father’s, kneeling before their graves as an empty silence swallowed me whole.
I sat there, dazed, lost in a labyrinth of thoughts I couldn’t escape:
Why was my life nothing more than a cruel joke?
Why did fate insist on stripping away everyone I loved?‘
Was I cursed to watch those around me ‘meet tragic ends?
As these questions clawed at my mind, the elderly village chief approached, leaning heavily on his cane.
He bowed before my parents‘ graves.
Then, with a solemn expression, he turned to me.
“There is something I believe you should know now.”
