Chapter 28

In that instant, heat surged through Trenton, making his head spin. Having Kristina this close felt intoxicating–her body pressed against his, blurring his every rational thought.
Kristina couldn’t help but hum slightly and grip Trenton’s arm, only to sense his pulse racing beneath her fingers.
“This is bad! Her expression turned serious as she pulled herself free from his hold. When he tried to grab her again, she quickly struck the back of his neck, knocking him out cold.
With Trenton unconscious, Kristina struggled to drag him out of the bathtub. After she managed to clean him up, she got him back into bed.
Trenton’s body was still burning up. Kristina tried everything she could–acupuncture, cold compresses, anything to bring his temperature down–but nothing seemed to work. It was like he’d been poisoned.
Kristina frowned and fired up her laptop, quickly typing in the URL and passwords to access a hidden network. As she scrolled through the site, she spotted a familiar avatar raging in the forum and clicked open the chat window.
[Magic Doctor, I’ve got a male coma patient who just woke up with the mind of an eight–year–old. He’s running a high fever, feeling faint, has an unsteady pulse, and his skin is cold and pale…] She listed Trenton’s symptoms quickly and hit send.
Before long, she got a reply. [This is clearly poisoning. Whoever did this is really vicious, trying to ensure he can’t have kids.]
[Could you please explain further?]
[It’s a rare plant toxin. Long–term exposure damages physical functions, making it hard to have children. An overdose can mess with the nervous system.
[The odds of a coma patient waking up are really low. It might be that they used too much, accidentally bringing him back but also harming his brain, leaving him simple–minded.]
The typing indicator popped up again, followed by another message. [About that fever, it’s tied to the drug. The part of the nervous system that controls body temperature is damaged. If it’s not fixed soon, he could remain like this for life.]
Kristina couldn’t believe someone would go to such lengths to hurt Trenton. In her past life, he hadn’t woken up early or become simple–minded. But it seemed that since she had made different choices, his fate had changed too.
She suspected this might be connected to their marriage. With Belinda pushing them to have kids, whoever was behind this was clearly trying to sabotage Trenton’s ability to have children. At least she’d caught it in time.
Kristina typed: [Magic Doctor, I need a prescription online. I’ll pay whatever it takes to cure him.]
Within seconds, a prescription popped up on her screen.
[Thank you. How can I repay you?]
[No need. I feel a connection with you, and I enjoy our chats. Consider this my gift; no payment necessary.]
Since the Magic Doctor insisted on not taking any payment, Kristina didn’t push back. After expressing her gratitude, she prepared to log off.
Just before she clicked off, another message came in: [How did you know I’m a Magic Doctor, my destined friend?]
Kristina’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, then stopped. She’d almost forgotten–James would become the famous Magic Doctor for another year. Right now, he was just another unknown player in the dark web’s medical underground, still working his way up.

The person she was chatting with was James Howe, a senior she hadn’t encountered in her past life. She had only met their mentor by chance after saving the mentor’s life.
But Kristina wasn’t that interested in studying medicine, she didn’t have a natural talent for it, so she had only picked up a few basic skills here and there.
After a pause, she typed: I know who you are, and I can also predict that within a year, you’ll be a doctor everyone admires. Your time is about to begin, so get ready for the spotlight and applause.]
Then she logged off the website. Without missing a beat, Kristina scribbled down the prescription notes and rushed to the pharmacy to pick up the medication.
Thanks to Trenton’s illness, the McClain family had set up a pharmacy stocked with rare medicinal herbs. Since the prescription wasn’t too complicated, Kristina was able to whip up the medicine in no time.
After making the medicinal soup, she went back to Trenton’s room and helped him drink it. Then she sat down next to his bed to monitor his condition.
Hours ticked by, and Trenton slept deeply. As warm morning sunlight spilled into the room, he slowly opened his eyes. Kristina leaned in quickly and asked, “Are you feeling okay?”
Trenton groaned, “It hurts.”
Instantly, Kristina’s expression turned tense.
