Yolanda’s face changed in an instant. ‘How does Kristina even know Yanis? Someone from her background shouldn’t have any ties to people like him. To families like the Bentleys, the Lewises were practically royalty–for the Bentleys? They were nothing, barely a blip on the radar!
Yet, she quickly recovered her composure, her charming smile returning. “Mr. Lewis, you’re so down–to–earth. It’s rare to see someone like you who gets along with everyone, no matter their background.”

Her words were laced with subtle scorn, as if to reinforce that she viewed Kristina as a mere stepping stone at the bottom of the social ladder.
“I feel lucky to meet Ms. Bentley and have the chance to be her friend, Yanis interjected smoothly, catching the sarcasm in Yolanda’s words. His narrow eyes flicked over her, carrying a hint of chill.
Yolanda was utterly shocked. This was Yanis, the well–established heir of the Lewis family, yet here he was, standing up for a woman of modest means, even at the risk of offending an old classmate like Yolanda.
“Yanis, talking like that might lower your status, considering how esteemed your family is-“Yolanda attempted to joke, but Yanis cut her off.
“So, you think you’re better than her?” he shot back, his voice laced with disdain. “I only invited you to this party because we were once classmates. With your family’s current standing, you really don’t belong at events like this.”
The words struck Yolanda like a slap. The Jackson family, once well–off due to their furniture manufacturing business, had seen their fortunes plunge thanks to her father’s mismanagement.
They had become a ghost of their former self, no longer able to compete in the high–end market and unable to establish themselves in the mid to low–end market either.
As Yanis’s voice reverberated in the air, it was perfectly pitched for those around to hear. Mocking glances shot toward Yolanda, each one piercing her like a sharpened blade.
A cold, heavy feeling sank into her chest. Humiliation burned through her, and she could feel her calm facade starting to crack. Forcing a tight smile, she turned and walked away.
At that moment, Trenton returned from down the hallway and saw Kristina laughing with Yanis. The sight instantly irritated him. He walked straight over and wrapped his arms around Kristina from behind.
“You’re my girl, only mine. You shouldn’t be this close to any other guy,” he declared possessively.
Yolanda, who hadn’t gone far from the scene, overheard Trenton’s proclamation and felt her hands clench into fists, her nails digging into her palms.
Jealousy burned through her, and ugly thoughts started swirling in her head. ‘Has Trento cally become a fool? Or how could he possibly see in someone as shallow and useless as Kristina? His girl? It’s so gross!”
Yanis noted the hostility radiating from Trenton. With a raised eyebrow, he leaned in closer as if sharing a conspiratorial moment with Trenton. “Only kids mark their territory like puppies. And a kid can’t keep a woman–only a real man can.”
Yanis turned and walked off. He stepped onto the stage and started his speech. “Thanks, everyone, for coming to my birthday party. This year’s been a big one for me, and I’m especially grateful for someone special who’s come into my life.”
He paused, his expression shrouded in mystery and charm, leaving the audience in suspense.
Guests exchanged glances, murmurs of curiosity rippling through the crowd as they speculated about this “special woman.”
“Could Mr. Lewis be announcing his girlfriend? He has never had any scandals. Which woman is so lucky?”

Kristina relaxed on the soft couch, savoring the sweet strawberries Trenton had handed her. The juicy flavor burst in her mouth as she sighed, “Who knew confessing love in a big family would be such a production? It’s like being a celebrity- everything’s so public and over–the–top.”
With a playful spark in her eyes, she picked up another strawberry and fed it to Trenton. “Let’s gossip a bit ourselves. Who do you think that woman might be?”
Trenton cast a deep look toward Yanis, a glint of something dark and sinister flashing in his eyes.
