When I heard those words, rage built up inside of me and I exploded, “Sandra, was I just your backup plan? A tool you could use whenever it suited you? You can’t just come running back to me now that you’ve lost everything! I don’t have to accept you!“>
“What right do you have to talk to me about having a child now?” I asked angrily.
Sandra’s face turned deathly pale in a flash when she heard my words. Her expression crumpled, her face flushed with shame and then she covered it with her hands before running away.
She did not have to explain anything because I already understood. Maybe, in the beginning, it was just a moment of weakness. However later, it turned into joy and the thrill of becoming a mother for the first time.”
That was human nature. At first, you probably did not care, but feelings grow over time. A bond formed. How could she not have feelings for the child she had carried in her womb for months?}
However, the human heart can only take so much.
Sandra rented a small hotel in town and started coming to the construction site every single day. She even bought doll and new clothes for Joy.
Joys glanced at them, then hid her hands behind her back and with a loud voice she said, “Daddy buys me toys and clothes. Daddy doesn’t like you, so I don’t want your things. Take them back.”
Then she turned her head away.
Sandra looked embarrassed but still followed Joy to where I was.>
“Go back, Sandra. Your company is waiting for you.” I told her but she stubbornly followed behind me.§
“Regan, look at this!” she said. “I’ve retouched our wedding photos. I even remodeled the house to match your tastes. I also bought three cars. You can drive whichever one you like.”
I glanced at Sandra but not a single word past my lips.
After a long silence, Sandra’s voice weakened. She sounded like a child when she was admitting a mistake. With a tone laced with tears, she said, “I regret it so much. I shouldn’t have hurt you, Regan.“}
She stared at me with eyes full of love and asked, “If we had a child back then… do you think he would’ve been as handsome and kind as you?”
“If we had a child, would things have turned out differently? Would you have forgiven me?” she wondered.§
I looked at her expressionlessly, then walked past her toward the construction site. Behind me, I could hear her soft, muffled sobs.
