Chapter 73
As soon as Devin’s voice sharpened, things outside moved fast. Red laser dots from snipers outside shot through the car window and landed right on Trenton.
Trenton’s hand clenched. He was sure Devin and Kristina had a deeper connection. The trip felt more significant than he’d thought, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that Kristina might be using Devin to get rid of him.
Anger surged through Trenton, but before he could even process it, everything went pitch black, and he passed out.
Devin couldn’t believe he was being taken for a fool. He shook his head, his voice flat and serious. “Trenton, don’t pretend to be dead next time, or I might actually shoot you.”
He reached over and gave Trenton a nudge, but Trenton didn’t move. Instead, he slipped off the table and crashed to the floor with a thud.
Devin was stunned into silence.
The henchman outside was equally stunned, still holding the rifle and staring at the scene. He’d been watching Trenton pass out, and now he was at a loss.
The henchman asked, “Mr. Anderson, what do we do now? I heard Mr. McClain isn’t in great health. If something happens to him, Ms. Rosewood might…”
He knew Devin wasn’t serious about hurting Trenton. It was just a scare tactic. But he couldn’t have guessed that Trenton would freak out so easily.
Devin glanced over at the restaurant, frustration written all over his face. “We gotta get him outta here, now. We all know he’s not doing so hot, so his fainting isn’t my fault,” he insisted.
Devin was all about his reputation–he couldn’t afford to let Trenton ruin it. If his daughter found out he’d scared someone so bad that they passed out, she’d probably think even less of him.
The bodyguards hustled Trenton out of sight. A few minutes later, they came back.
“Did Kristina see anything?” Devin asked, his voice tinged with a rare hint of guilt. He didn’t mind swallowing his pride when it came to his daughter.
The subordinate shook his head. “Nope, she didn’t see a thing. She just came out of the restroom when we got him back there.”
“Alright, then it’s none of our business. Let’s get out of here,” Devin said, pushing her chair back.
In the restaurant, Kristina couldn’t help but glance at Trenton, who was slumped over the table. She felt even more torn. It was like waiting for a surprise–she had no clue if he’d wake up dumber or sharper.
Just as she was thinking this, Trenton’s eyes slowly opened. He winced and started rubbing his head.
“Trenton, how are you feeling? Your head hurt bad?” Kristina asked, her voice all worried.
Trenton pursed his lips, looking kind of miserable as he kept rubbing his head. “Yeah… it hurts,” he mumbled.
And on top of the pain, he had this strange feeling, like he’d just had a dream and seen someone in it. It was so annoying–he couldn’t remember a single thing.
“Here, let me give you a rub,” Kristina said, her voice soft as she started gently massaging Trenton’s head. “You’ll feel better in a second.”
Trenton didn’t shy away. Instead, he leaned into her, playfully nuzzling against her waist. He seemed to have reverted back to his childlike state again.
Just as Kristina finished comforting him, her phone buzzed. It was Yasmine’s call.
“Hey, Kristina, are you busy today?” Yasmine’s voice was bright and cheerful. “We didn’t get to have much fun last time. Let’s do something today.”
Before Kristina could answer, Yasmine continued, “I’m feeling so much better now. My brother sorted out those jerks as soon as he got back. He has so much clout that everyone listens to him. Now Marilyn doesn’t mess with me anymore.
“And my brother put her on lockdown. She’s superstitious, and she even tried to turn the whole family against me. My brother made her bow in front of the memorial hall to reflect on her actions.
“It was something else–you should’ve seen it. That annoying woman finally got what she deserved.”

Chapter 73
Yasmine invited Kristina out to celebrate. Always the life of the party, she was already dressed to impress, ready to have a good time.
“Alright, sounds good. I’m with Trenton at the breakfast place on Goldsun Street. Send me the location, and we’ll meet you there,” Kristina said, glancing over at Trenton.
“Okay, Yasmine replied.
Kristina hung up and saw Trenton looking at her with those big, hopeful eyes.
“Kristina, are you going out? I want to come too. I don’t want to be left at home like last time. You promised you wouldn’t leave me,” he said, his eyes wide and pleading.
