I cast a glance at the calendar. Today was the eighth anniversary of our marriage. Felix had completely forgotten about it, yet he remembered that tomorrow was Debra’s birthday.
What a mockery!
I tidied up the house a bit and then hailed a taxi straight to the law firm.
This farcical marriage should come to an end.
“Hailey, are you truly certain about this?” Isaac Whitman asked.
I nodded.
Isaac let out a sigh and handed me the divorce agreement.
“Thank you, Mr. Whitman.”
Isaac had been my lecturer at university. He had always been convinced that I was destined to be an outstanding lawyer. However, against all expectations, I ended up as a housewife.
“That’s good. This marriage has really taken a toll on you!”
I offered an awkward smile and didn’t refute it.
Back then, Felix persuaded me to become a housewife, claiming that only with me at home could he fully focus and work his hardest.
My emotions overcame my reason. I gave up the chance to sit for the bar exam and embraced the role of a housewife instead.
It was undeniably my own misguided decision, and I had no one else to blame. Isaac chided me for a while, and then he pulled out a form and presented it to me.
“Now that you’ve decided to get a divorce, retake the bar exam. Join my firm in the future. Given your capabilities, it’s a cinch.”
I gazed at the form with a rueful smile. “Mr. Whitman, I haven’t engaged in legal matters for eight years.”
Isaac slapped a pen down in front of me, his manner firm.
“Then start relearning! I’ll assign someone to assist you. He’s your junior. You can learn from
him.”
It was a young, vibrant, charming man in his twenties.
“Hailey, hello. My name is Oscar Wellington.”
Felix was widely acknowledged to be extremely good–looking during his youth.
However, Oscar was even more stunning than him. Anyone who ran into Oscar on the street couldn’t help but look back at him frequently.
No wonder men were often drawn to young and fresh–faced girls. Young people truly could bring joy to others.
As I observed Oscar, his face beaming with a bright, innocent smile, it was difficult to reconcile this lively demeanor with the solemn profession of law.
He was enthusiastic. When he caught sight of the divorce agreement in my hand, his excitement seemed to surpass even my own.

excitement seemed to surpass even my own.
“When you find yourself with the wrong person, it’s crucial to part ways with him in time.
You should get rid of such an unappealing, middle–aged man without hesitation to avoid
squandering your precious energy.”
Somehow, I sensed that Oscar had an inexplicable hostility towards Felix.

“He must have cheated on you, right? He neglects his beautiful wife and fools around with a
b**ch. Isn’t he afraid of getting into trouble?”
As I listened to Oscar’s words, an image of Felix falling from grace flashed across my mind.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
Meanwhile, the dissatisfaction that had been pent up in me for years seemed to disappear.
An overwhelming sense of relief washed over me.
As like attracted like, an unfaithful man should be with a b**ch.
I shouldn’t be angry with them.
“Oscar, if you give up being a lawyer, I think you can be an excellent stand–up comedian.”
I praised him sincerely.
Oscar was overjoyed. Suddenly, he leaned closer to me. “Hailey! You truly get me! My second wish is to do stand–up comedy, especially the kind where I can mercilessly roast people.”
His unexpected approach made my heart flutter inexplicably.
It had been ages since I’d been this near to a man.
Indeed, Felix and I hadn’t had much physical contact for a long while.
After we got married, I planned to have a child. But following a huge fight over Debra, every single time we were on the verge of having sex, she would interrupt us by claiming that she had
fallen or had a stomachache or that her kitten was dying.
Felix would invariably pull his half–removed pants back up and dash to her side.
By the time he returned, any amorous mood we’d had was completely dissipated.
Felix would always patently apologize to me, insisting that he saw Debra as a friend and a
younger sister and that he felt obligated to take care of her.
Besides, he would ask me not to overthink it and promise that if there was a next time, he
absolutely wouldn’t go.
But men’s promises often turned out to be empty.
Time and again, I watched Felix rush out of the house. I seethed with anger and then voiced
my complaints. Later, my heart was broken, and eventually, I became desensitized.
As time passed, he scarcely talked about having a child anymore, so I ceased preparing for pregnancy. I couldn’t shake the feeling that he had been intimate with another woman.
“Hailey, considering your soon–to–be ex–husband’s betrayal, as long as we have the evidence, Mr. Whitman and I will ensure he walks away with no property.”
“Don’t bother. I just want to divorce as soon as possible.”
I couldn’t bear to spend even one more day with Felix.
I had been by his side when he had nothing, and I never cared about wealth.

Oscar grinned, his eyes shining brightly. “With me around, I promise you that you won’t be short–changed.”
Suddenly, a car screeched to a halt right in front of Oscar and me.
I had just come to my senses from the honking sound when the window of the front
passenger seat rolled down.
There sat Debra, looking at me with blatant provocation.

“Hey, it’s you, Hailey! Are you on a date?”
