Chapter 10
“This is a self–torture tactic. She must have been rescued by those people,” Eugenia said after chasing after him.
My father grabbed her and his eyes turned dark as he scolded, “She jumped into the sea to prove her innocence and you still won’t let her go?”
My brother became even more furious and dragged Eugenia to the window.
“I remember Janette could not swim. She was covered in wounds in such cold water. How painful would it be if she jumped in?
“You should go down and feel the temperature of the sea water before you say these slanderous words about her!”
Eugenia was held down by her brother, with half of her body leaning out of the window. So, she screamed in terror, “Brother, don’t! I can’t swim!”
My brother’s whole body stiffened and his face changed drastically.
“What did you say?!” he asked as he pulled Eugenia back.
My father was a little confused and my mother was crying sadly as seeing two sibling quarrel.
“Calm down, Deon. We have already lost Janette, we cannot lose Eugenia too.”
“Yes, Deon. They are both your sisters. You can’t kill one because of the other.”
My brother was furious and slapped Eugenia in the face before he explained, “But Mom, Dad, she lied to me ten years ago!
“She said she could not swim, so who saved me back then?! Say it! Come on, say it!”
Eugenia covered her swollen cheek, bit her lips and said nothing.
My brother started tearing her clothes like crazy.
“Please don’t!”
Eugenia screamed and resisted, but her brother still tore her clothes off, revealing her smooth back.
“How?” My brother’s eyes lost focus and became dull as he saw it.
“The doctor clearly told me that you crashed into a rock while trying to save me and the scar on your back will remain for life.”
My parents were shocked too, so they asked, “Deon, didn’t you say it was Eugenia who saved you? What’s going on?”
My brother grabbed his hair in pain.
“That year, Eugenia and I went to the beach to play. While surfing, I was swept away by the waves and swallowed a lot of seawater.
“I felt so drowsy, but I remember someone shouting at me to hold on before giving me their

life jacket and dragging me back to shore.
“The waves were enormous and we drifted so far. By the time we reached the shore, I was already unconscious.
“When I woke up, I was lying in a hospital bed. Eugenia was by my side, her eyes red as she held my hand and told me she had crashed into a reef trying to save me. She even showed me her back, wrapped in blood–soaked gauze.
As he spoke, his eyes lit a fire again, “But it turns out she can’t swim and her back is not injured. She’s lying!” Then he asked Eugenia, “Tell me! Who saved me back then?”
Eugenia’s eyes flashed with guilt and she could only make excuses.
“Brother, I really saved you back then. I was holding the lifeboard! There was no one else on the beach besides us, so who else could it be but me?”
