Out of all the luxury items, the necklace was the least valuable.
Yet it was stored in the most delicate packaging, a testament to the care its owner had taken with it.
Hearing my dismissal, Dominic’s eyes reddened, and his hand trembled as he held the box.
“This necklace…”
“The County Clerk’s Office is still open. If you’re not busy, let’s get the divorce certificate now.”
There was no point in arguing anymore.
At the mention of the divorce, something seemed to click in Dominic’s mind.
His expression twisted into something unreadable.
“You’re really this eager to get divorced, Audrey?
“You couldn’t even wait until next week?”
I was baffled by his sudden shift in tone.
Wasn’t he the one who came back early?
But I was eager to finalize this chapter of my life.
“Yes,” I said plainly.
My answer seemed to enrage him further.

His chest heaved as he struggled to contain his anger.
“My grandfather’s health has just improved, and you’re already doing this?
“You don’t care about his well–being at all, do you?
“He treated you like his own granddaughter, and now you’re stabbing him in the back!”
From his words, it was clear Mr. Blackwell had learned the truth.
I was stunned.
When I’d said goodbye to Mr. Blackwell the night before, he hadn’t shown any signs of knowing what had happened.
Still, I kept quiet in the face of Dominic’s accusations.
Let him misunderstand.
Once I had the divorce certificate, I could explain everything properly.
