Warm liquid seeped from my body onto the floor, the pain so overwhelming I was close to
blacking out.
My injured leg, which had started to improve, was now useless again. Surrounding me
was Gavin Carter’s cold fury.
Savanna Harlow clung to him, sobbing into his chest while he murmured soothing words.
A memory surfaced–once, someone had insulted me, calling me an orphan who sold herself for status. Gavin had tied the girl to the rooftop railing until she was hysterical with
fear.
Another time, someone recklessly chased my car on a busy highway. Though I was
unharmed, Gavin destroyed their entire career out of revenge.
But the man who once protected me so fiercely had now turned his focus elsewhere. Even those memories felt fragmented, too distant to piece together.
I looked at Gavin now and couldn’t reconcile this man with the one I had fallen in love
with.
What new torment would he inflict on me for Savanna’s sake?
His startled gasp caught everyone’s attention when his bodyguard entered the room.
“What are you waiting for?” Gavin’s voice cut through the tension. “Do I need to teach you?”
“Break every finger on the hand that slapped her,” he commanded coldly. “And if her
mouth can’t stay clean, let her see what life’s like without it.”
So, this was the price of crossing Savanna.
I swallowed the metallic taste of blood, summoning every ounce of strength to turn around.
Savanna’s tear–streaked face glowed triumph as she met my gaze, her eyes daring me to

But he shoved her away as she nestled closer to Gavin for comfort.
For the first time, Gavin looked at me.
His expression twisted with disbelief, the muscles in his face twitching as though he wanted to speak but couldn’t find the words.
