Chapter 17
“F–fiance?” Alicia repeated after Antonio as her eyes widened in horror.
“Yes,” Antonio confirmed, and he felt Zabelle dig her nails into his skin. He moved to grab her waist, and he felt her stiffen in his arms, after which, he dug his own nails which made her remove her hand from his waist.
“Is she the reason why you rejected all the women I picked for you?” Alicia probed her son as she looked at the woman he was holding.
“Hmm,” Antonio mumbled, refusing to give a yes or no answer.
Zabelle, on the other hand, was turning redder with every passing second as she was livid with anger and embarrassment over her current dishevelled state.
Did Antonio lose a few screws in his head? When did she ever agree to marry him?
It was well–established that they hated and couldn’t stand each other. So why did he say she was his fiancée in front of his parents?
If he had said it while they were alone, she wouldn’t have thought too much of it, but the darn asshole said so in front of his
parents.
Her eyes met with Antonio’s mother who was already looking at her and she gulped. It would be expected if the woman flared up and called her names while accusing her of entrapping her son. Zabelle prepared herself for such when Alicia opened her mouth to speak once more.
“Zabelle, is it?” Alicia spoke and Zabelle nodded in affirmation as she was scared to speak. “Why are your legs shaking?” the older woman inquired from her, and this made Zabelle’s eyes slightly widen, as that wasn’t what she was expecting.
“She just got discharged from the hospital after waking up from a one–month coma,” Antonio answered on Zabelle’s behalf.
“Oh,” Alicia drawled. “Come and sit down,” she said, and Antonio stepped away from Zabelle. Her legs shook, and she was able to remain standing on her feet for a few seconds before she dropped to the ground.
“Antonio!” Alicia called, and she walked up to her son and hit him on the shoulder while Zabelle glared at him. The day her legs came back to normal was going to be a horrible day for Antonio, she swore. “What is wrong with you?” Alicia scolded Antonio.
“She asked her to go sit down,” Antonio shrugged nonchalantly.
“Antonio,” Alicia called in a warning tone as she bent to help Zabelle to stand on her feet. “My apologies, my son’s an ass,” she said, and Zabelle couldn’t agree more.
Antonio rolled his eyes, after which, he carried Zabelle and placed her on one of the sofas in the living room.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Zabelle,” Alicia said with a bright smile on her face, which caught Zabelle off guard.
By indication of how much of a terrible person her son was, Zabelle expected worse from Alicia, but that wasn’t happening.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you too, ma’am,” Zabelle finally spoke.
“Why the formality when you’re getting married to my son. Call me mum if you’re comfortable with that,” Alicia stated, surprising Zabelle once more, as she had received an opposite reaction from Jeremy’s mother.
As she opened her mouth to speak, the doorbell rang. “That’s the physiotherapist,” Antonio stated just as a woman rushed to open the door.
have a lot to talk about, but your health
Just like he had said, it was indeed the physiotherapist who was at the do comes first. I’ll see you after,” Alicia said to Zabelle who nodded, Antonio then carried Zabelle to a room so she could begin training her legs.
As soon as the physiotherapist got to work, Antonio left and headed to his study, as he suspected his parents would be waiting for him there. Just as he had suspected, they were seated in the study.
Closing the door, he walked over to the table and sat on it so he could be comfortable when his mother started asking him questions. His father knew better than to ask due to the relationship they had.
“Get on with it,” he urged his mother.
“Fiancee? When were you planning on telling us?” Alicia immediately fired. If not for the fact that she had gotten tired of her son avoiding home and decided to come there, she wouldn’t have met Zabelle. This son of hers was really annoying.
“When the time was right,” Antonio responded, and Alicia frowned.
“How would I know?” Antonio asked, which made Alicia grab one of the pillows which was on the sofa she was sitting on and throw it at her son. A pillow he easily caught.
“You know how much I’ve been clamouring for you to find a woman to settle down with, you could have at least told me, so I would have told you to stop.
“I did tell you to stop, you just didn’t listen,” Antonio retorted, and his mother glared at him, which made him grin.
“What led to her being in a coma?” William, who had been quiet all along, spoke.
There was immediate tension in the room and Alicia felt it. “Antonio,” she squinted her eyes at her son, who sighed as he understood the meaning behind her looks.
His mother wasn’t able to fully mend the relationship between the father and son, no matter how much she tried. When she came to terms with this fact, she made a request to her son, and that was for him to behave well to his father whenever she was around them.
“She was stabbed by a man who wanted to take advantage of her Antonio responded. There was no need for his parents to know the details surrounding the incident, as that was between him and Zabelle.
“Where is…”
“He’s dead,” Antonio responded before his mother could finish asking her question. Alicia nodded in satisfaction.
“Oh, and by the way, she belongs to the Pierce family. She’s the daughter of Lily and Gabriel,” he casually dropped at bombshell.
“How is that possible? They only have two children,” Alicia frowned.
“No, they have three, but they never show the first one,” William corrected his wife. “She’s the first child, isn’t she?” he inquired and Antonio nodded in affirmation.
