Chapter 8
Lowell froze for a second, then after a brief silence, his tone softened a little.
“But I missed you.
“The weather’s gotten a lot colder these days. Why are you still dressing so lightly? You really don’t take care of yourself”
He said, trying to act nice, as he took off his cost and tried to drape it over my shoulders.
I stepped aside and let the cost fall to the ground.
Lowell’s hand froze in mid–air.
I said coldly. “If you’re here to sign the divorce papers, then I’m happy to see you. If you’re here to give me your coat, then you can go back.”
Upon hearing this, Lowell’s face twisted with frustration.
12:06 PM c
“Why are you always thinking about divorce?
Tve taken care of all the company matters these past couple of days. I came here specially to find you. You don’t like Kaitlynn, and I didn’t even go to her birthday party. What more do you want from me?”
I only felt his words sarcasm.
Seeing my lack of response, Lowell pressed his lips and tried to calm me down again.
“You’re just overthinking everything.
“There’s a new coffee shop near your place. I’ve already reserved a spot. Let’s go there and talk. Or we can go to your place. It’s so cold outside, and I’m worried you’ll catch a cold.”
When he said that, I couldn’t help but snort
After all these years of marriage, this was the first time I heard Lowell worry about me catching a cold.
I remembered last autumn when I returned from a business trip.
A storm had hit Axelton, and the temperature had dropped drastically.
I was shivering at the train station, unable to get a taxi, so I called Lowell to pick me up.
He was incredibly impatient on the phone.
“Don’t you know how busy I am? How can you bother me over something so trivial? It won’t kill you to freeze for a bit.
In the background, I could hear Kaitlynn’s teasing laughter.
When I tried to say something else, Lowell hung up without a word.
Later that night, I finally dragged my soaked body back home.
When he saw me sne
saw me sneezing repeatedly, Lowell frowned, grabbed same cold medicine, and tossed it at me from a distance.
“How did you catch a cold? Don’t forget to take the medicine.
“nil sleep in the guest room for a few days. You are an adult, and you should learn how to take care of yourself.”
And with that, he slammed the guest room door shut.
Thinking back to that moment, I looked at Lowell, pretending to smile in return.
“Well, you are right. After all, I wouldn’t want to pass it on to you.”
After I said that, Lowell’s face went as pale as a sheet.
