Chapter 7
I knew perfectly well that Eleanor wouldn’t sign the divorce papers. What she always needed was the status of being married.
She never cared whether I loved her or not; what mattered was having an obedient, servile husband.
Three years ago, Eleanor’s father made a will stating that as long as Eleanor got married, she would inherit all of the company’s assets.
Eleanor was his only child, but as a father, he knew all too well his daughter’s temperament.
Eleanor was proud and vain, uneducated, and spent all her time partying with a crowd of bad influences.
He hoped that marriage would settle her down, that she would have a child quickly, so he could trust his closest allies to groom the child as the company’s new heir.
He had planned all this before his death, but he underestimated his daughter’s foolishness.
As for me, the reason I married Eleanor was never for love.
What I wanted was to reclaim what was rightfully mine.
The next morning, I woke up to find that Eleanor had not signed the divorce papers.

A message from her popped up on my WhatsApp.
[Hubby, let’s take some time to cool off. I won’t be coming back for a while.]
I knew Eleanor was starting to avoid me. I didn’t reply to her and went ahead with filing the divorce suit.
Eleanor claimed she was ill, but I knew she was just avoiding me, hoping to quickly find a new man who could replace me as her husband.
Meanwhile, the Ming family’s company faced a supply crisis.
Avery Group, originally focused on overseas trade, had its CEO died unexpectedly a few years ago. After the new leader took over, the company swiftly shifted its business direction, from being a producer to an investor, and the supply products were now only sold domestically.
After Eleanor’s father passed, Avery Group was kept afloat solely by a few conscientious
shareholders.
However, the vacant CEO position remained unresolved for far too long.
Eleanor and Claire didn’t understand a thing about business dealings.
The supply crisis continued for several days until Claire came to me.
“Keith, I’ve always thought of you as my own child.
“I know you love Ellie. This mess is because of Ellie’s foolishness. You care so much
about her that you can’t bear to see her suffer even a little. You even refuse to take any of our family’s assets in the divorce.
“I know you love her deeply, and Ellie’s just confused for a moment!”
“Claire, Ellie and I aren’t meant to be. After the divorce, I’m planning to go abroad for further study. In fact, I had already received an offer from an overseas company before we
got married, but I turned it down because of Ellie.”

Claire seemed taken aback. I knew she must have thought I was just another love–struck fool.
“Keith, I know you’re a good kid. I apologize for Ellie’s behavior. From now on, I’ll treat you like my own son!”
“I appreciate your kindness, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I’m leaving soon anyway.”
“Keith, since we’re family, could you help me?
“My company’s been facing some issues. I know you studied business, and you understand this stuff. Could you give me some guidance?
“I can offer you a two percent share of the profits.”
I declined Claire’s offer but gave her advice on the projects she presented.
My seemingly casual advice was, in fact, designed to encourage her to take risks with
certain investment projects.
