Chapter 6 Barbara’s Pregnancy
I held Nina close to me, gently saying, “Nina, even though you don’t have a great dad, I’ll always protect you.”
It was three in the morning.
I received a call from Anthony. He agreed to the divorce and said he would move out of the house.
But I felt nothing. The house had always been mine. Why should I thank him?
Nina was feeling a bit better, so I took her in my arms and headed home to pack my things. But to my surprise, I saw Anthony’s mother, Sara Bartlett, and Barbara arriving.
“Diane, I heard you’re divorcing my son and taking his money. How dare you! Just because you had a daughter, you think you can divorce my son and take all his money?”
Sara’s expression was sharp.

“Mrs. Bartlett, please,” Barbara said sweetly, pretending to
be innocent
“It’s just that Diane got lucky. Anthony is a kind man. Otherwise, he would not give her money.”
I grew cold. “Mrs. Bartlett, maybe you’re getting too old to remember, but when I married your son, your family couldn’t even afford a decent house. I bought this place with my own money, all paid for in full.
“Now you’re saying this house belongs to you and accusing me of wanting your son’s money? He cheated, and he should have left with nothing. What I’m doing now is generous enough to allow us both to maintain some dignity in the end.”
Anthony’s face flushed with embarrassment. It seemed like he didn’t know how to respond, but then Barbara’s gaze shifted to Nina, and her face lit up as if she had won a victory.
“Diane, you can divorce him, but this little girl is a Bartlett. She belongs with us.”
Sara reached out to grab Nina, but my friend, Robin

Robin’s temper was much fiercer than mine.

“Ugh, Mrs. Bartlett, you old witch! Do you think everything should belong to Anthony? Do you have no shame? If it weren’t for Diane marrying your useless son and helping him start a business, where would your life be now? You’d still be living in the gutter.
“And stop calling Nina a little girl! What’s wrong with you? You can’t stand her so much? She is your granddaughter! People like you, who prefer sons over daughters, will end up with no grandchildren.”
Robin’s words infuriated Sara. She grabbed Barbara’s arm, saying, “Who says I won’t have grandchildren? Barbara’s pregnant, and I had a fortune teller look into it. She’s having a boy.”
Hearing that Barbara was pregnant with Anthony’s child made me feel even more bitter, and it only strengthened my resolve that divorcing Anthony was the right choice.
Barbara looked at me with a shy smile and then lovingly stroked her belly. “Sorry, Diane. That night,

Anthony and I just couldn’t control ourselves. But you couldn’t give him a son, so you can’t stop others from doing it. I truly love him, you know.”
I was stunned for a moment.
“When did this happen?”
Barbara, with a soft and coy tone, gently rubbed her belly. “I can’t really remember, but it was probably the night your house caught fire.”
“Ugh, you bitch!” Robin rolled up her sleeves, ready to slap Barbara, but I stopped her.
“Enough, Robin. If a dog bites you, are you going to bite it back?”
I started packing my things, preparing to leave.
Just then, Anthony rushed in.
“Anthony.”
As soon as Barbara saw him, she ran towards him, but
to her surprise, he pushed her away.

Anthony’s gaze had been on me the entire time. When he saw my suitcase, his expression became a little frantic.
“Diane, where are you going?”
I ignored him.
Barbara couldn’t stand being ignored by Anthony.
She grabbed his hand and placed it on her belly. “Anthony, come feel your child.”
“What nonsense are you talking about?”
Anthony instinctively tried to deny it, but his mother exposed him. After all, she was convinced that Barbara was carrying her grandson, treating her like a saint.
“Anthony, what are you saying? Barbara is carrying your child!
“She’s nothing like Diane, that shameless woman who only wants to steal your money!”
“Mom, please stop.”

Anthony looked at me in panic, as if he feared losing something. “Diane, I was drunk at the time, and I don’t even know what happened afterward. You should…”
