Chapter 5
I arrived at Crescent Pack and landed a new job as a council assistant.
My boss kept pushing me, “I don’t want to overwork you, but those new recruits are hopeless.”
I nodded, though confusion lingered. “But why do I have to handle Alpha Steven’s pickup? Where’s the driver?”
Before he could answer, he dug into his takeout, muttering, “Mathew got his license revoked for drunk driving. It’s on you now. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure you get overtime.”
“Laura, you’ve been here six months. When it’s time for promotions, I’ll remember who

pulls their weight, you understand?”
I didn’t have a choice but to accept.
But as fate would have it, an accident delayed me by two hours.
When I finally contacted Alpha Steven, all I got was a cold reply. “I rented a car at the airport. Go back.”
Feeling defeated, I drove back.
But trouble followed, and before I even reached five miles, I was rear–ended. I slammed the car door open, not caring about the luxury car behind me.
“Do you know how to drive? How could you not see the distance?” I shouted.

couldn’t control the accelerator. It’s my fault. I’m really sorry.”
Something about his face seemed familiar.
He looked at me, puzzled.
A few seconds passed before he asked, “You’re Laura, right?”
“You are…?”
“I’m Steven. We were in the same class at Falcon Ridge Financial Academy. Does that ring a bell?”
I felt a flash of memory–him, a handsome young man in school uniform, asking me out to a movie.
I blinked, trying to shake the memory. “Long time no see.”

He smiled, opening the car door for me.
As I stepped out, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. He had grown so much taller.
Clearing my throat, I looked away awkwardly. “What now?”
He glanced at his watch, then took out his phone. “Sorry, there is an urgent meeting.l can’t afford to be late.”
“Send me the repair costs,” he said, rushing to exchange contact info.
As he sped off, I handled the situation, but by the time I returned to the pack, an hour had passed.
My boss, a pack elder, shot me a disappointed look.

“I told you to pick up the Alpha. Instead, you let him drive himself and wrecked the pack vehicle. What were you thinking?”
“I didn’t crash it! Someone hit me, and he said he’d take responsibility, I argued, but my boss didn’t want to hear it.
“Forget it. -our pack’s Alpha–wants to have a talk with everyone. Apologize to him when you meet”
As I walked into the meeting, I saw him standing in front, confident and commanding, making a speech. My mind froze.
This was Alpha Steven, who now led the entire packy.
And I had no idea that the man I had just
