Chapter 7
Bran appeared out of nowhere, blocking my path outside the packhouse.
“I’ve been looking for you,” he said, breathless, his voice almost desperate. “Elena said you worked here. I’ve been circling this place for days.”
I stared at him, stunned.
Whatever words he rehearsed were the last thing I expected. Before I could dismiss him, his expression turned solemn.
“Laura, I’ve been thinking about you. About us. I made mistakes. Let’s fix this.”
I stepped back. “Who put you up to this?” I asked, half–laughing, half–daring him to admit.

the joke.
“No one. I mean it. I didn’t realize how much you mattered until you were gone.”
I scoffed, arms crossing.
“Touching. But no thanks. Since you left, my life’s been peaceful. Thriving, even. Why ruin a good thing?”
That hit a nerve.
His brows knit together. “Laura, when did you become like this? Money–hungry? Cold? I loved you!”

“Good. Then maybe you’ll learn what you deserve.” My voice sharpened as his words grew increasingly pathetic.
“Laura, come on. I-” His plea broke as Steven’s voice cut through the tension.
“Laura,” Steven’s tone was steady, commanding. “You’re late.”
I turned, catching Steven leaning against a
nearby tree.
His gaze flicked to Bran, a faint

“You heard him,” I said, taking the chance to walk away. But Steven didn’t follow immediately.
The elevator doors closed behind us moments later, silencing the world outside. Steven stood close, his scent–a mix of pine and earth–steadying me.
“He’s your ex?” he asked, breaking the quiet.
“Yeah,” I mumbled, avoiding his eyes. “Embarrassing, right?”
“He doesn’t deserve you” Steven said firmly. “Don’t let him drag you down. You should be with someone who respects you.”
I forced a laugh.
“Sure. One day. Right now, making money under Elder Marcus is priority.”
