- 11.
My head started throbbing.
He didn’t steal or harm anyone. The cops.
wouldn’t do anything about this.
Maybe the cops would not come at all.
I called Chloe.
“What’s up, Sarah? Is everything alright? It’s
too early.” Chloe sounded sleepy.
く
“Mark is here!” I went straight to it. “He is
outside my place!”
“What?!” Chloe woke up. “He is crazy! I’ll be
there soon!”
I guarded the door, scared he would break it.
I could see him doing that.
He kept talking. “Sarah, why are you so afraid
of me? Did Chloe say bad things?”
I wouldn’t betray her, so I stayed silent.
“I knew it,” Mark said, “You guys have always
been together since school.”
“I didn’t hurt you, Sarah. It hurts me that you
think I would.”
L
I didn’t answer, leaning against the door. I felt
weird.
Something was bubbling inside.
“Sarah, I am hungry.” Mark said. “You used to
make me breakfast.”
“I want to eat now. I want your food…”
He started crying, begging, “Open the door,
please?”
I didn’t know what to do.
I should do as Chloe said and run.
But I felt this sadness in his voice.
It was real.
く
I wondered what he meant.
Had I really done all of that?
Who was I to him?
It wouldn’t hurt just to talk.
I sighed and opened the lock.
Mark grabbed me, “Sarah!”
He was crying, “Why were you so cold? I
thought I was going to lose you!”
I was stiff, shocked, I didn’t know how to
react.
Then, a voice came, “Mark, what are you
doing here? I was looking everywhere!”
<
It was the woman from yesterday. His
girlfriend.
I hated her. It showed in my voice.
“Sir, please let go of me.”
