- 6.
The air was filled with the familiar smell of
hospital disinfectant.
Too weak to open my eyes, I could only hear
Mark’s voice, muffled and distant.
“Not family, uh, just a friend.”
<
“It’s okay, I’ll pay for her hospital bills.”
“Call me if anything comes up.”
After that, Mark was gone, probably running
to Tiffany.
I woke up slowly and the nurse came to get
the doctor.
“Ms. Johnson, your condition is concerning…”
The doctor looked worried, “You know your
body, working like this is not good for you.”
I gave a weak smile. “I’m trying to pay for the
surgery, right?”
く
“You really should get surgery soon,” he said,
handing me the scan report. “The tumor is
showing signs of spreading.”
After he finished, I asked, “Does the ‘friend‘
know?”
He shook his head, “This report just came
out. And he’s not family. Without your
consent, we can’t give anyone information.”
“Okay, good.” For some reason I felt relief.
My condition was not heavy to me, I felt like a
burden lifted off.
After the surgery, the tumor would be gone.
My memory might not be complete.
<
But maybe, I would forget Mark, I would no
longer be heartbroken?
It was worth it.
I signed the consent form, without a second
thought.
Lying on the stretcher, memories started
flooding in.
The anesthesia took over and I closed my
eyes…
