Alex’s hands shook as he held the medical report tightly. The scowl on his face soon vanished and a shaky breath escaped his lips in terror.
“No. This… this can’t be right.”
He flipped the pages and read through the lines unfocused, feeling like the world was crashing upon him.

Alex’s hand quivered as he dialled his grandfather.
“Grandfather please tell me honestly, that year when I was suffering between life and death… It was Jessica who sacrificed her body for me right? She donated her kidney and let the doctors take her blood for me to get well. After that she went abroad to recuperate.”

“Those two bastards are going to ruin the Dawson corporation completely. Did you seriously listened to brats like them who cannot even take care of their younger sister Elena and are still stuck on Jessica whom they have no real blood relation with?!
They have fooled you all along!”
“W–What do you mean?” Alex felt as if a stone had fallen into the pit of his heart as he
dreaded the truth.
“How can you not be aware that Elena’s business sense is outstanding, you fool?! Those two have always been jealous that Elena’s grandfather will hand over the Dawson Corporation to her.
Even I,a man in my eighties, can see that It’s been their plan all along to match you up with that girl Jessica to gain our company’s access and to throw Elena out. Everything they said to you was a lie!” Alex stumbled back in absolute shock.
“No…it..it can’t be. Jessica is not like that-”
“There is a limit to which you can disappoint me Alex, I heard from your secretary that you are running around that girl these days. Did you choose her over Elena?” Alex was stumped as his mind was in complete chaos.
“I..I promised Jessica that I will marry her.” Alex recalled that three years ago he kneeled down in front of Jessica, promising her that he would love her and would never let her be wronged.

All these years he had treated Jessica as his savior only to now realise that she was just an imposter all along.
“Are you out of your mind?! I arranged your marriage with that selfish girl when you were young because I thought that she was the child of the Dawson family and even after it was found that her parents came from the countryside and the babies were swapped in the hospital I did not oppose your engagement with her.
But when she came to know that you were suffering between life and death, she herself pretended to be sick and left you to go abroad. It was Elena who donated you her kidney and allowed the doctors to extract her blood no matter how much it harmed her.
That child disregarded her life for you and to think you are repaying her like this! Do you think I am a fool to give her five percent of our company’s share without any merit?”
A loud thud echoed as the folder slipped from Alex’s fingers and hit the floor, with his bloodshot eyes tearing up he barely whispered.
“Why did you not tell me this?”
“I did not say anything because Elena never wanted to burden you. She even went against a golden opportunity that I gave her and married you! How can you who has never handled a single responsibility since childhood match up with someone as talented as her?!”
“What do you mean? Did she… Did she not force you to marry me?” There was a silence on the other end before Alex’s grandfather sighed.
“If it was anything then it was me who forced her to marry into the Giovanni household but you were not her intended groom.” Alex’s heart thumped erratically as he clutched his heart, feeling intense pain in his chest.
“She is gone…Elena has left me behind.” A tear trailed down Alex’s eyes with guilt and sadness overpowering his senses. His grandfather stayed quiet for sometime before whispering.
“You can only bring misfortune Alex. Alas, you spoiled everything.
Indeed, I never wanted a good child like Elena to marry someone as arrogant and cruel as you. Since childhood you have only brought shame and disgrace upon this household just like now when you are openly cheating on Elena.
If only she had not married you but the one I chose for her.”
