Chapter 17
The phone slipped from Alex’s hand, landing on the couch. He stared at the wall, his mind racing. I was there at that party?
To think that I had heard everything that he said that day made Alex’s mind spin.
He reached for the whiskey bottle to soothe the pain in his heart yet my crying image flashed before his eyes. Panicking, he quickly grabbed his phone and dialed my number.
It was eerily quiet when I pick up the phone.
“Elena…please listen.”
I paused. “What do you want, Alex?”
“I just got a call from the manager of Star Villas, how did you manage to buy that for my birthday when I never even gave you a penny? And…I had everything then why did you buy it for me?” Upon mentioning the topic, it sent a pang through Alex’s chest like his heart was on fire.
“Didn’t you say three years ago on our wedding day that the villa by Star Manions was your dream?”
“Elena, baby” Alex’s voice cracked.“That was years ago and you still remembered that?”
“Why did you think I used to work day and night like a slave and still follow your orders to eat just a single meal everyday?
I used to be blind in your love Alex….I wanted you to have everything, fulfill all your desires… everything you said was imprinted on my mind. I cannot believe how foolish I was.”
“No!”
“I’m sorry for everything. I was a fool! I will get on my knees to beg for forgiveness Elena, I will do whatever you say and live the rest of my life loving you…I will spend the rest of my life begging for your love please!”
“Does a monster like you even know what love is?” I let out a bitter laughter as my tone filled with mockery.
“You made your choices Alex, now learn to live with them.”
“Elena baby we used to be so in love, please listen to me for the old times sake” he pleaded.
“Your adopted sister, that shameless slut Jessica, I will send her far away, no I will kill her for you!” My eyes widened when I saw Alex discard the woman whom he once claimed to love with all his heart so easily.
“I don’t care if you send your mistress away Alex and I will never be involved in your heinous deeds.”
“Baby, I was drunk on my own ego, my own selfishness but now that I know the truth of everything I will try to change. I want you back Elena. I’ll do anything to make it right!” “You want me back after everything you’ve done?
“Yes! Even if… even if we can’t have children.” he stammered. “We can raise Jessica’s child

“Yes! Even if… even if we can’t have children,” he stammered. “We can raise Jessica’s child together. I’ll make it work. I’ll… I’ll take revenge on your brothers for what they did to you. Anything, Elena. Just give me another chance.”
“Jessica’s child?”
“You want me to raise your mistress’s baby? Are you even listening to yourself Alex?”
“That child will never know any other mother apart from you.”
“No!” My heart felt incredulous as I realised that earlier Alex was not talking about just killing Jessica in rage, he must have thought thoroughly to first let Jessica deliver the baby and then kill her so that he could give that child to me for raising.
Goosebumps rose on my skin as I shuddered, still on the call I felt nauseous when the doorbell rang but had no energy to get up. Damien who was unable to reach my call for the past hour had rushed back to my place.
“Elena, baby just come back, I will not let you be wronged anymore-”
“Elena!” The manly voice froze Alex.
Damien took away the phone from me when he saw my absolute pale face.
“Who is that bastard beside you Elena?!”
“It’s Damien, Stop bothering Elena or I will rip you to shreds Alex!” My ex–husband stared at his phone, his eyes red with rage. The bottle of whiskey that sat within his reach was crashed against the wall as he hung up
The phone rang later that evening, pulling Alex from his stupor. The doctor called asking him to collect the medical reports for his partner.
Alex approached the city hospital, preoccupied with the thought of getting the medications Jessica needed.
“Doctor.” Alex greeted.
“Mr. Giovanni, please sit.”
“Mr Alex, your grandfather must be over the moon, to hear the news.” Dr. Jonathan said with a warm smile as he presented the report. Alex frowned, Doctor Johnathan was their family doctor and was close to his grandfather, under no conditions his grandfather would have asked him to take care of Jessica.
“The last trimester is the most crucial so please make sure that your partner eats nutritious food and takes proper vítamíns.”
“Last trimester? What are you even talking about, Jessica is only three months pregnant.” The doctor’s expression shifted, his smile faltering. “It seems that we have a misunderstanding here, I don’t know any Jessica… I was talking about your wife, Elena. She was severely malnourished last time she came, almost making me think you did not let her eat.” Alex, ridden with guilt, could only listen with a shocked face.
