“Alex…can it be that Elena is still angry with me? Let me dial her number, maybe she will come if I apologise for that day.”
“No! She has gone too far this time. How dare she ruin our party?!” Alex gritted his teeth in fury.
“Alex you know how Elena is, maybe she is still working night duty at that old restaurant. What if she forgot about our get–together?”
“I have spoiled her too much! This time I will teach her a proper lesson!” Alex turned around to leave only for Jessica to clutch his arm as tears dribbled down her eyes.
“Alex, what if there is any misunderstanding, let us come with you too.” Jessica wanted to bring all of Alex’s friends to the place where I worked to show the difference in our status and insult me.
“Just do whatever damnit!”
My husband along with his friends drove to the diner where I used to work as a waitress. Storming inside the place, Alex asked for the manager immediately.
“Where is Elena?! Call her out this instant!”
“Elena? Why would she be here?” The receptionist asked, confused to which Jessica replied with fake tears.
“I am Elena’s sister, please call her. We will not judge her by this…” A look of disdain passed Jessica’s face before she continued.“We will not judge her for working as a waitress here-” “Elena left the job yesterday, to think you look so well off when you cannot feed that child a simple meal properly.” Before Jessica could complete her sentence, my manager, Mrs John who was an old lady in her seventies arrived.
“Left? What are you talking about?”
“Just as you heard, that child studied hard so it’s not a surprise that she was offered a job abroad. Previously she rejected the proposal twice already but today she told me that she was finally ready to accept it-”
“LIES!” Alex banged his fist on the table making it crack.
“What stupid lies are you sprouting? If she was so afraid of me that she hid in a hole as soon as I arrived then she must have not angered me from the beginning!
And to even make up that she has gone abroad? A girl who cannot even do anything without my assistance will go away without informing me? Impossible!”
“Sir, the manager is telling you the truth,” a waitress said, only to be interrupted.
“The truth huh? Haha by going abroad is she trying to sever our ties?” Alex threw his head back laughing as if it was a joke but when Mrs John did not speak a word standing calmly Alex’s heart trembled in fear.
“This is the thing she sent me to give it to you if you ever came searching for her.”

Alex rolled his eyes and would have thrown away the parcel if it wasn’t for Jessica’s best friend, who laughed sarcastically.
“God, Is she still throwing a tantrum? Elena is still the same as when we were young.” Fiona, Jessica’s best friend retorted “Yesterday she threw her wedding ring away and today this? Alex, your wife is truly troublesome-”
“Fiona!” Jessica reprimanded sharply, her eyes turning wide in panic, like Fiona said something she should have kept hidden.
“Alex it’s nothing, Fiona had a slip of tongue just now-”
“What do you mean by Elena throwing her wedding ring away?” Alex, shocked at those words, stared at Fiona demanding an answer.
“Well….you see, yesterday I found this diamond ring outside Jessica’s bedroom after the party ended. I asked Jess and she said that it belonged to Elena.”
Alex, who was confident till now faltered. Yesterday the way I looked at him with broken dead eyes flashed before him suddenly.
The possibility that I saw him cheating with Jessica made his entire body numb.
When he returned yesterday I did not ask any questions, nor did I complain that he treated me with such heartlessness to even push me down in anger. My sudden disappearance made his heart feel heavy.
“Alex, I will help you search for sister Elena, I–I am worried about her, there seems to be a misunderstanding here.” Jessica accompanied Alex as he rushed home before ripping open the parcel.
A small videotape along with some documents were kept there, Alex played the video after connecting it to the smart television.
“Alex.” I addressed my husband in the recording.
“I once thought that you loved me just as much as I did. But you need not worry anymore, now I am completely aware that I was just a plaything all along while your heart belonged to my sister.”
“From this onwards I will not be there to ruin your mood anymore Alex. It was my stupidity to think a cruel and ruthless man like you could ever love me.” My voice cracked at the end
before I continued.
“This time your birthday present is not a ‘stupid tie‘ anymore so you can open it now, you both will like it. I am sure you and my sister would have a great night in our marital bed just like you planned yesterday.
Oh! silly me, how could I forget that satin dress you gifted me on our anniversary…it’s there in the wardrobe sister, finally you have everything that you desired. Goodbye.”
Alex stared at the screen without removing his eyes even for a second, his heart sinking with each passing sentence. All color drained his face when I mentioned the satin dress.

“What the fuck did you say to Elena?! Told her that I was sleeping with you?” Alex’s enraged tone made Jessica bite her lip in hesitation, before she stepped closer with tears streaming down her face pitifully.
“Alex… I can never break you two apart. It’s not me.I didn’t tell Elena a single thing!” Silence engulfed the surroundings as Alex looked at the screen replacing the video again as if he could not believe it.
“Impossible” he muttered. “She loves me so much, how can she even think of leaving me?..No this is all a stupid ploy by her to attract my attention.”
Despite saying this, his stomach twisted as he rummaged through the documents in the parcel in panic. There it was, the silver diamond pendant glinting in the fading light.
For a moment, all he could do was stare as the pendant slipped through his fingers falling on the ground with a clink.
“She left this..” Alex whispered. “This was my gift to her on our wedding night…” With that he left the parcel half unopened running upstairs like a maniac with Jessica following him
like a lost puppy.
Rummaging through the wardrobe haphazardly he took out the birthday present he had thrown at the back without another thought and opened it.

“Impossible! How can she leave me behind?!”
The glaring words with Elena’s signature at the end of the papers made Alex stumble back in absolute horror.
Jessica looked at Alex in frustration before replying in a sickly sweet voice.
“Alex, I know I shouldn’t say this but Elena hates me since childhood and had often threatened mom and dad that she will leave our home in the past. She did these kinds of things many times to gather attention.”
“This is fucking ridiculous!” Alex’s cold voice boomed in fury, his eyes fixed on the papers. Holding Jessica’s arm in a tight grip he dragged her outside in the middle of the night. “Hurry inside the car! Elena has nowhere to go except her grandmother, she will be with her.

“Alex, don’t blame her. She has been raised by countryside people, and after mixing up with them for too long, she does not know right from wrong.” Even before Jessica could complete her sentence, Alex gripped her shoulders roughly, his eyes wild in disbelief. “When we reach there, you are going to deny that I ever slept with you. I was only playing with her all these years but she must love me just like she always had.”
“…Alex…then what about me? Will you n–not marry me now that she is gone?” Jessica was startled to see that Alex was so distraught over my absence and asked crying. “She is not fucking gone! Elena can never leave me, I will not allow it!
You don’t understand Jessica, I must be the one to leave her behind, not her!”
Jessica still in shock after seeing Alex like that, sat inside the car without another word. “I..I have waited to be by your side for so long…I can wait more.” Alex felt guilt for the woman beside him and coaxed her gently.
“I will marry you but this is not the time.” Jessica clenched her fists in frustration as they drove in the middle of the night.
The journey to the hospital was fruitless for Alex as the doctor told him without missing a beat that my Grandma was discharged.
“To think Elena can take such a drastic step even without consulting you once. I will take care of your home till Elena is back.”
“No need. We will talk about this later.”
“What?”
“Get off, let’s talk tomorrow.”

“You don’t fucking get it! All those years ago, I told my grandfather explicitly that I will break up with Elena and marry you but she used some unhandled dirty tricks to force me through this marriage and even got five percent of the Giovanni empire’s shares!
I hate people who try to play games with me so how can I leave Elena be, she must suffer until the end.” Jessica could not speak a word after that and simply nodded.
Alex dropped her off and rushed home while dialing my number hundreds of times only for it to disconnect automatically.
“This darn woman!” Alex cursed under his breath as he asked his secretary to arrange a
new number for him.
It was past midnight when I received an anonymous call on my number, worried that it belonged to one of friends.I picked up quickly.
“Elena, when are you coming back from France?” The deep raspy voice of Alex jolted me awake, tremors went through my body as I realised my husband was completely aware of my location.
“If, you disconnected the call, I will make sure that no hospital in France can treat your grandmother.” My finger on the disconnecting sign froze as I took a deep breath.
“Didn’t you already cheat on me with Jessica? Now that I am out of the picture you should celebrate-”
“NO! That was just a one time thing. It was a fucking mistake!
Didn’t you marry me for luxury and money? You acquired shares in Giovanni corporation and had everything that you could have only dreamt of earlier. Now you are my wife, the woman of the richest CEO in the country.
You have everything that others can only dream of so don’t throw a fit and listen to me now, come back tomorrow.”
A small smile played on my lips as I laughed heartily with tears streaming down my face.
“Wife of the richest CEO? My life was worse than a beggar.

“It was you who said you wished to work outside, you are not a child Elena, do you expect me to spoon feed you? Everything was brought upon you by yourself.” Listening to Alex, my heart shattered completely.
