Furious by Alex’s words I still endured, under no circumstances I wanted him to know about the existence of the twins, for my children should not have a ruthless father just like I had. I suffered all my life but for my babies I only wished that they would be raised with warmth and love.
“We are done Alex. This talk is over so stop bothering me. Whether I choose another man or not has nothing to do with you anymore.”
“Just sign those divorce papers.” Alex chuckled humorlessly, gritting his teeth in anger.
“You shameless woman, are you so impatient for a divorce because you wish to have alimony? Do you think that the money you receive from me will make you and your lover rich?”
“Let me tell you a secret Elena, from the very beginning of our marriage I was well aware of what kind of disgusting creepy woman you were.” Alex’s words were like acid corroding my soul, each word cutting deeper than a knife making me stumped.

You must be thinking that you might live well with my money but let me tell you, I will make your life a living hell! I will use all possible means to not let you have a single penny to your name!” I refused to let the gathered tears fall as I realised that from the very beginning Alex was only using me.

A week passed slowly and it was my first day at my new office. I was reviewing some documents when someone called my name.

“The manager has called you into the office.”

“You were so confident to survive without me weren’t you? I have invested in this company and now I am a shareholder and just like this again I am at the top and you are still at the bottom begging. Didn’t you say that you don’t need me?”
“Alex, please stop. Don’t talk like this to my sister.” Feeling numb I saw Jessica’s performance as she dabbed her eyes with the handkerchief.
“Sister? This woman who snatched me away from you and became my wife after blackmailing my grandfather, why are you still being kind to her?”
“Alex please, Elena is still my sister. She must have made mistakes in the past but I cannot let her be.” Jessica took out a stack of currency notes and presented it to me.
“This might help in your grandma’s medical treatment sister, please accept it.” In the past I would have bowed down my head and endured Jessica’s mockery wrapped in the garb of sympathy yet this time a slow smile danced on my lips.
“What is that? A few thousand dollars? If you have seriously studied once in your life instead of fooling around with other people’s husbands you must have known that it can not even buy an asthmatic patient’s medicines let alone bear the cost of treatment.
Instead of offering me this like a charity, how about you use this money to educate yourself?”
“You!” Jessica lost her temper for a moment before she spat poisonously in a sickly sweet tone..
“Nevermind, I am not here to argue with you. Alex, why don’t you tell Elena why we have come specifically to meet her?” While Jessica was arguing with me Alex watched me fixedly, his eyes not leaving my face for a second.
“This can still change. Just like I promised Elena, if you return to me, I will make up for everything in the past and we can get over this.” Jessica’s arrogant smile was wiped off completely as she stared at Alex in astonishment.
“No. I will never return to you.” Alex stiffened, the gentle eyes that he used to coax me with disappearing as he glared at me.
“Alright then! Don’t blame me for being cruel then!” A stack of papers were thrown at me.
