He hadn’t even come close when he heard my cold voice.
“Scarlett, what did you say?”
He knelt beside my legs, looking at me in disbelief.
A slight curve formed at the corner of my mouth. “I said divorce.”
I stared at him intently, wishing my gaze could kill him.
I hated him. I hated that he rescued me from darkness, only to
push me into an abyss.
The Carlisle Estate and the Montgomery family were old friends. When I was in high school, my father jumped to his death due to Ms. Carlisle’s debt issues, and the shock caused my mother to develop mental problems.
At that time, it was the Montgomery family who helped handle my father’s funeral arrangements and paid to send my mother to a high–end care facility.
Ethan, in particular, stood by my side throughout. I took a year off from school, and during that year, he was there with me, taking care of me and guiding me. It was because of him that I was able to move past this family tragedy.
During the summer break of my freshman year in college, I went to the Montgomery family home for dinner as usual. Ethan walked me back, and even though it was just a few steps away, he always insisted on seeing me enter my house before leaving.

But this time, he suggested we take a stroll in the square. I

agreed. Thus, in the bustling square teeming with people, he magically produced a bouquet of flowers and a ring box from behind his back.
“Scarlett, will you be my girlfriend?”
The diamond was small, but he said he’d bought it with money he’d earned from his summer internship. He promised to get me a bigger one after graduation. His gaze was particularly earnest as he looked at me, his eyes seeming to hold countless stars.
I lost myself in that tender gaze, unconsciously nodding my head. After that, Ethan always treated me well, even filling the void of parental love I’d been missing.
As I was nearing graduation, the Montgomery family suggested that Ethan and I should marry quickly and start a family.
But I still wanted to continue my studies.
It was Ethan who, facing pressure from his family, helped me secure the opportunity to pursue my master’s degree.
After finishing grad school, although I had wanted to make a name for myself in my career, I voluntarily became a housewife, staying at home to cook hearty meals, just so Ethan could feel the warmth of home every day.
I’m grateful to the Montgomery family, and I love Ethan. Doing all this brings me nothing but joy.Even as time went on, Ethan gradually stopped caring about my feelings. When I cooked, he complained about the taste. When I did housework, he said it wasn’t clean enough. When we went out together, he grumbled that I wasn’t young or pretty enough.

I endured it all because he was my last source of warmth in this world.
But now I see that my choices and patience were nothing but a joke.
He could be warm towards me, but he could just as easily give that warmth to someone else at any time.
He seemed to finally notice the small mound of dirt beside me and hesitantly asked, “Where’s Whiskers?”
“Dead,” I replied calmly.
He looked somewhat guilty. “I was wrong yesterday. I shouldn’t have left you stranded, but Melody was really scared—”
I cut him off. “There’s no point in talking about this now.”
He thought himself very understanding. “If you really liked it, I can buy you another one. If one isn’t enough, I’ll get you two.”
“Ethan, not everything can be replaced by buying a new one, whether it’s a necklace, a cat, or you and me. Let’s end it here.” Seeing the seriousness on my face, he finally became grave. “Scarlett, are you for real?”
I looked him straight in the eye. “Yes.“He suddenly changed his demeanor: “Scarlett, there should be a limit to your temper tantrums, shouldn’t there? Have I been too easy–going with you lately, making you think I’m a pushover?”
I laughed mockingly: “We have nothing more to say to each other. I’ll give you the divorce papers tomorrow.”

With that, I wiped the tears from my face and left.
Ethan was furious, kicking the magnolia tree: “Fine, fine, fine. We’ll see just how stubborn you can be.”
