“What Who’s that woman?”
I started telling Gavin what had happened this morning.
“What the Pck” was his only reaction as we finally reached Ryker’s school, leaving him no time to react further
“You did that, and yet he still doesn’t believe you’re not his ex–wife?”
I shrugged, quickening my pace. I needed to see my son. I needed his hug. Today had been exhausting, and I wasn’t even halfway through it.
When
reached the entrance, I spotted Ryker’s teacher, Miss
Lanie.
“Miss Lanie, where’s Ryker?” I asked his teacher, glancing around.
“Oh, Miss Miller! Ryker is at the playground, waiting for you. His classmates invited him to play, and I encouraged him to join them,” she said with a warm smile. “He’s a bright and well–behaved student but tends to be distant from his classmates. Aside from his twin, he doesn’t really make
friends.

We were walking toward the playground when Cavin’s phone rang.
“What?! God, Rachel a mistake? Sorry? How could you mess up my schedule? I’ll be there!” he snapped, his frustration evident
I turned to him. “What happened?”
“Oh, now my hate for Liam Anderson has officially doubled because he stole my secretary, and now I’m stuck with someone who can’t even manage a simple schedule!”
He ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
He then explained that Rachel–his new secretary–had overlooked an important meeting-

But my smile vanished when he suddenly stood up and pushed the little boy in front of him.
“Ryker!” I called out, hurrying toward them.
The little boy cried even louder.
“Why did you push him, Ryker?” I asked calmly as I helped the boy stand up.
Ryker didn’t answer and avoided my gaze
I sighed. “Are you okay?” I asked the little boy, pulling ou
out my handkerchief. But before I could wipe away his tears, he ran off with two other boys

“Eunice, your mom’s looking for you! Let’s go Eunice’s nanny called. She waved goodbye to us before leaving.
Now, I was just me and my son. I noticed how his small fists were clenched tightly.
“Ryker, baby
“I’m sorry, Mommy,” he murmured. “I know you said I shouldn’t hurt anyone and that I should count to ten before doing anything”
I gently took his clenched fist and opened it. His palm was red, as if he had been holding it too tightly for too long.
“And you did, right? Are those kids bullying you?”
My heart ached when Ryker rubbed his eyes. They were red–I could tell he was holding back his tears:

He bit his lip before finally breaking down into quiet sobs. He wrapped his at
arms around my neck and buried his face in my shoulder
“1–I’m okay, Mommy,” he said between sniffles. They just kept making a big deal about how 1 didn’t put a picture of my father on the family tree. 1

Tears welled up in my eyes as I kissed the top of his head. “Thank you, baby and I’m sorry.”

I rubbed his back gently as he continued to cry until he stopped.
“How about we get some ice cream?” I told him as I cleaned up his face.
“Really? But we had an ice cream yesterday.
I pinched his check. “You’ve been so brave today, and I dunk my little man deserves a treat”
His lips twitched slightly, the first hint of a smile trying to break through. “Can I get two scoops”
I chuckled. I stood up and took his hand. “You can get three if you want.”
We went to an ice cream store in front of their school. I ordered his favorite one, chocolate and cookies and cream
“You sure you don’t want Mommy to talk to Miss Lanie?”
Ryker shook his head and continued eating his ice cream. “I can manage, Mommy”
I smiled sadly and ruffled his hair. “Always tell Mommy

He nodded and smiled up at me before scooping some of his ice cream and feeding it to me.
