Chapter 5
My legs felt as if they were forged from solid lead as I dragged myself towards the heart of the small town. This church was the very lighthouse of hope for the pack.
Over the years, I had become a familiar figure within those hallowed walls.
My lips moved in a ceaseless murmur, pleading for Elena’s eternal rest in the celestial haven.
Suddenly, the heavens seemed to split asunder.
The rain lashed against the church. The large, cold raindrops pelted my body, turning my clothes into a sodden mess.

I was shivering violently.
Shaking uncontrollably, I wrapped my arms around myself.
Then a sweet, metallic taste filled my mouth, and with a violent cough, a gush of blood erupted from my lips.
I knelt there, hour after hour.
Dawn broke.
The priest made his morning rounds.
From a distance, he spotted me.
His eyes widened in horror as he saw the pool of blood beside me.
“Lord have mercy!” he gasped. “Child, with such devotion, what is it you seek?”

Summoning every last ounce of strength, I managed to stand, my legs wobbling like a newborn fawn’s.
I crossed my hands over my chest and bowed deeply. “Reverend Father, I humbly ask for a statue of the Guardian Angel… and a holy medal.”
The statue of the Guardian Angel, a symbol of hope and protection, was said to stand watch over the departed, a silent sentinel that would keep their souls company in the afterlife.
And the holy medal, a small but powerful talisman, was believed to shield the wearer from the perils of the world.
I was granted these two precious items.

I held them as if they were the most fragile and valuable treasures in the universe.
I made my way back to Frank’s house.
I wanted to give the statue to Elena. And I hoped that the holy medal would watch over Frank, keeping him safe in the days to come.
But I knew alpha Frank would never accept anything from me willingly. So, I waited until the house was quiet, the midday sun casting a warm glow over the empty halls.
Like a thief in the night, I crept into Frank’s study.
I placed the statue of the Guardian Angel on his desk, arranging it carefully, hoping that he would notice it.
As for the holy medal, I planned to secretly

place it in his car.
My eyes were fixed on the study door.
At 6:30 sharp, the sound of the door opening jolted me from my reverie.
Frank was home.
I watched with bated breath as he entered the living room, the box containing the statue in his hand. For a brief moment, hope flared in my chest.
With a look of utter impatience, he casually handed the box to the butler and gestured towards the storage room.
The storage room was filled with the detritus of Frank’s past.
I rushed after the butler.

“Don’t throw it!”
I snatched the box from the butler’s hand. When I opened the box, my heart plummeted. It was empty. The statue was
gone.
Just then, Frank’s cold, familiar voice cut through the air. “I knew it was you, you wretched nuisance!”
Slowly, I turned around to face him. There he stood, towering over me, holding the statue I had risked everything to obtain.
The butler quietly slipped away.
Alpha Frank advanced towards me,. He
swung the statue in his hand.
“Do you really think these pathetic gestures.

can make up for what you’ve done to Elena?”
“I just… I just wanted to give her something to keep her company in heaven”
Frank’s face twisted into a cruel sneer, and he raised the statue high above his head and, with a guttural roar, smashed it down. onto the floor.
“No!”
I lunged forward, but it was too late.
The statue hit the ground with a deafening crash, shattering into a hundred pieces.
וו
Frank kicked the pieces of the statue into the pile of junk.
You’re a selfish, spineless coward, Nancy!”

With a cold, mocking laugh, he hurled the holy medal across the room.
It arced through the air and landed with a splash in a puddle of dirty water.
“You should rot in pain for the rest of your life!” he spat, before turning on his heel and striding out of the room.
I stood there, staring at the broken statue and the sodden holy medal, my eyes blurred with tears.
