Chapter 14
I clutched his hand tightly, my mind racing as I focused on his features. Slowly, everything clicked into place. My heart skipped a beat.
“You were the one who saved me three years ago, weren’t you, Christopher?”
He turned his head, a flash of irritation in his eyes. His jaw tightened, but he couldn’t hide the hint of relief.
“Finally, you’re waking up…”
Memories collided in my mind, and
everything clicked. No wonder we always seemed to run into Christopher on my dates with Charles.
Christopher, smug as ever, leaned back with

a grin. “It’s not my fault you mistook your savior, Vicky.”
I narrowed my eyes, realizing the truth. “You’re sharp and capable–why pretend to be some clueless rich kid?”
He sighed, rubbing his forehead as if exhausted. “I don’t care for the endless social obligations. It’s easier to play the fool and catch everyone off guard.”
I had no reply. His carelessness, his aloofness… I was slowly getting used to it.
The assistant entered with a report, but his words froze me. “Charles wants to see you.”
In just a few months, he had crumbled. The
t man I once knew was now tired,
broken, his eyes full of regret.

leave my company alone” he pleaded.
I scoffed. “Charles, you gave up on us first.”
“The moment you hid your engagement with Tracy Davis from me, we were done!” I shot back, my voice cold. “And as for your company? Don’t worry, I have no interest in taking down a sinking ship.”
I shot a glance at Christopher, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “If anyone should be begging, it’s you. Ask him, not me.”
Before Charles could respond, Christopher cut him off with ease.
“Vicky, I’ve been on my feet all day. My legs are killing me. Can you help me out?”
With a sly grin, he threw his arm around my

shoulder, pulling me away from the stunned Charles.
As we walked past him, I added coolly, “Christopher, we’re getting married next month. You should probably start acting like it.”
The End.
