During this time, I said nothing about divorce, and Nicola, clearly content, played the part of a devoted husband. Every day, he held the baby, showered us with gifts, and behaved in a way I never thought possible.
One evening, as the baby cried endlessly, I tried to contact the doctor while flipping through medical books. Nicola, too, was frantic, holding the baby, desperate to soothe him.
“I’ll protect you both,” he whispered. “Not a single ounce of suffering will come your way.”
Then, Nicola’s phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, he glanced nervously at me before quickly hanging up. It had to be Angela.

I took the baby from his arms. “It seems urgent. Maybe it’s something important. You should take it, I said, stepping away with the baby in tow.
Nicola sighed in relief.
When I returned, Angela’s voice shattered through the phone.
“Nicola, you still love me, don’t you? Why are you doing this to me now?”
“Don’t come over here! Go away!”

I took the baby to the hospital, while my thoughts swirled with the knowledge that the time to take over the company was near.
The next day, I placed the divorce papers on the bed. With the baby in my arms, I walked
out.
A message from Angela pinged as I left:

[No matter how tied you are with Nicola, in the end, he’ll always come back to me.]
I snapped a screenshot of the conversation, sent it to Nicola, then blocked him
completely.
Grabbing my luggage, I walked away for good.
