Chapter 3
Before I could rise, Waimea slammed her hand onto my shoulder and shoved me back down onto the bed.
“I suggest you rest properly. My brother’s men are guarding the place outside, and unless I give permission, you’re not going anywhere!”
“You’re illegally imprisoning me! I’ll call the police and have you arrested!”
I glared at her, teeth clenched, my hands tightening into fists under the blanket.
Waimea raised an eyebrow and grinned at me, her expression one of wild, unrestrained
arrogance.

“Carola, don’t say things that sound too harsh. How is this illegal imprisonment? We just want you and your baby to get the rest you need. Even if you call the police, they won’t bother with something so trivial.
“Besides, my brother holds a key position in the mafia. The people outside will show him respect, while you, a mere orphan with no family, have nothing to stand against us.”
I paused, the reality of her words sinking in. How could I possibly fight them?
Right now, I felt like a piece of meat on a butcher’s block, at their mercy.
But I couldn’t just sit here and accept it. No. matter what, I had to see Hart!
I stared hard at Waimea’s face. Just as she was about to speak again, I swiftly threw the

I glared at him, about to speak, when Waimea, having freed herself from the blanket, stormed over, teeth gritted, raising her hand to slap me.
“You filthy bitch, how dare you lay a hand on me? Do you want my brother to put a bullet in you?”
Just as her slap was about to land, I quickly dodged, twisting to the side and ended up behind Hart. The slap hit him instead, unexpected and loud.
Waimea froze, her expression changing instantly.
“Hart, I’m so sorry, did I hurt you?”
Hart shook his head, his face cold, but before

he could speak, Waimea turned to blame me.
“It’s all her fault! If she hadn’t started it, I wouldn’t have hit her. You don’t know how hard she kicked me just now…”
She pouted, looking utterly victimized.
Hart turned to glare at me. “How dare you hurt someone? Carola, when did you become this vicious?”
His unreasonable accusations filled me with seething anger.
“Shouldn’t I have hit her? She doesn’t want a child, yet she’s coveting mine, even holding me captive illegally. A woman like her deserves to be torn apart!
“And you, Hart, you’re no better. All this time, you’ve been lying about your feelings, saying

“Don’t tell me you’ve had a change of heart?”
“I haven’t…” Hart denied it, his gaze lowering, refusing to meet ours.
But a glimmer of hope stirred in my chest.
I knew that look all too well.
Whenever he was uncertain about something, he lowered his head like that, unsure of how to respond.
And that look confirmed it–Waimea had been right.
