Chapter 6
Half an hour later,Carter insisted on staying with my mother to confront the killer who had taken my life.
The psychopath killer grinned as soon as he saw Carter.
“You’re the one she called for help a dozen times, aren’t you?”
“Even if you’d answered one call, maybe I wouldn’t have killed her!”
“Do you know? She almost escaped my pursuit!”
“But in the end, she made a mistake- and that voice… it was yours, wasn’t it? The word ‘good. That’s how I found her…”

Carter sat there in the hallway, unmoving, lost in thought.
The police brought in my belongings.
“We just found this, Ariya’s purse…”
It was stained with blood and dirt.
His hands trembled as he held it, but he opened it anyway.
Inside, aside from a lipstick and a set of keys, there were only the medicines I had prepared for him.
He pulled them out one by one, inspecting each box with painstaking slowness.
A folded A4 paper slipped out from between the boxes.

He picked it up, unfolded it…
“She was pregnant?”
He smiled, but the expression was so twisted.
The police stood in silence for a long time, before finally uttering two words, “Condolences…”
Carter slumped onto a bench, looking like a man who had lost everything–his soul was truly gone.
My mother walked out, not even sparing him a glance.
She snatched the ultrasound report and my purse from his hands.

Carter, like a walking corpse, followed her.
“Get lost! Don’t make me see you again!”
My mother snapped.
“Aunt, can I just see her? Just one last time…”
My mother’s heart softened.
Maybe she thought, seeing this man was the. only way I could truly rest in peace.
She took my belongings to the funeral home.
Carter followed behind, unhurried, like a lost
soul.
They waited in silence for my cremation.
By evening, my mother came out holding my
urn.

Carter stood up.
But my mother didn’t even spare him a glance, clutching my ashes tightly.
“Ariya, mom’s taking you home…”
I had finally returned to my hometown.
Every day, I stayed by my mother’s side, washing clothes, cooking, going shopping with her, just like when I was a child.
Every few days, she would go to clean my grave and sit in front of it, talking to me.
Time seemed to rewind to my childhood, when she used to chatter endlessly in my
ear.
I never saw Carter again.

The next spring, Carter married Leila.
Their wedding was grand, so extravagant that they rented out an entire island.
Leila had once said that she would marry the man she loved the most on that island, and spend her life with him.
I heard that Leila’s depression had been cured.
Everyone was happy for them.
Not long after the wedding, rumors spread that Carter had gone mad.
He and Leila survived for three months on instant noodles.
On the day Leila was sent to the hospital,

Carter tenderly held her hand and said, “Ariya was fine, why can’t you be?”
On my anniversary, he suddenly took Leila to the bridge cave where we once lived.
This time, Leila couldn’t take it anymore.
“It was my fault. I left you because I was afraid of being involved with you. Your mom didn’t want Ariya to marry you, and after you rejected all the women she pushed toward you, she came to me…”
“We both fabricated a lie, trying to steal you away from Ariya.”
“You didn’t love her. You just felt guilty about her. Why can’t you move on now that she’s gone?”
“Carter, I can’t take it anymore. Let me go…
