Chapter 104
Dexter was losing his temper, but I had already regained my composure.

Dexter was right. He was Juno’s father, and everything he did and said affected the child–especially something as serious as leaving a criminal record. He knew Juno was my soft spot, and he used that to his advantage again and again.
I took a deep breath. I’m not arguing with you. When are your relatives arriving? I’ve already sent you the restaurant address and time. Please get back to me soon.
“Alright, Dexter said, sounding surprisingly agreeable. “Let’s meet at noon this Saturday at the restaurant. But listen, since we’re asking for a favor–something that involves physical harm–we can’t skimp on the money. You know what I mean, right?”
“I get it,” I replied, cutting him off.
“Good. See you Saturday.”

After hanging up, I exhaled slowly. The situation was difficult, but I had to face it head–on, one step at a time. I couldn’t avoid it, and I couldn’t let fear control me.
Saturday arrived in the blink of an eye. I got to the private room half an hour early to get everything set up.
I had booked the most expensive room, ordered the best dishes, and prepared twenty envelopes with 170 dollars each inside. At least, I thought, that should be enough.
By noon, I was still
still the only one in the room. I called Dexter to ask where they were.
It took two calls before someone finally picked up. Dexter said, “I’ve picked them up at the airport. Just wait a little longer. I’m on my way.”
“Airport?” I was confused.
Although Dexter wasn’t from Fairhaven, it wasn’t far–just a 10–minute train ride. I thought, ‘So why are they flying?”
It would take another hour by car from the airport to the restaurant. There was nothing left to do but wait.
I waited for an entire hour and a half before Dexter finally showed up, leading the others into the room.
There were six of them. I did the math quickly–if I gave each person two envelopes, that would be 340 dollars. I planned to discreetly give them the money after the meal.
“Sorry, I appreciate you coming all this way. Please, have a seat. You must be starving.” I said with a forced smile, ushering them in. “The waiter can start bringing the dishes. The food here is excellent. You should try it.”
er women I had met before, so they weren’t unfamiliar. But
They all sat down–four men and two women. Two of the younger the others were strangers to me.
Dexter gave a brief introduction. I learned that these were all direct relatives from the Cook family. The four men were his cousins–strong, healthy, and in their prime. They were all a perfect match in blood type.
I felt a sense of relief. It seemed Juno’s surgery was all set to go. At least Dexter wasn’t trying to p people he had brought were young and fit, which was what I needed.

promised them a generous reward.
Manuela Cook interrupted. “Enough with the formalities. First, reimburse our flight tickets.”
Another cousin, Cynthia Cook, added, “Yeah, stop talking about big rewards. You didn’t even book our flights. Not very thoughtful, is it?”

I was taken aback. The person who had arranged their travel was Dexter. As Juno’s father, that was his responsibility, not mine. I never expected them to expect me to cover that too.
I glanced at Dexter. He wouldn’t even meet my gaze. Instead, he kept talking to the people around him or shielding his face with his fork.
I couldn’t help but sneer inwardly. I thought, ‘So he’s been waiting for me to make the first move.
I said, “No problem.
