When I got home that evening. I found myself scrolling through my phone, looking at Jeremy’s contact info over and over. After thinking it over, I finally decided to send him a message,

Jeremy replied almost immediately. It was just a joke. Besides, you promised me you’d be ‘always available: Consider this the first time I’ve used that privilege.]
I could hardly contain my frustration. Now I was sure of it: Jeremy was single for a reason.

I had been so naive, not thinking through all the details, and now I had unwittingly walked straight into this mess.
Then, Jeremy called. I was curious to hear what he had to say, so I answered immediately. “Hello?”
“Are you mad?” His voice was light, almost like he was calling just to enjoy my reaction.

“You don’t understand my mom’s personality. If I don’t let her hit a dead end once, she’ll just keep pushing. So when I saw you, I thought of this idea. Honestly, we must be fate, right? Otherwise, how would you have ended up there today?”
Jeremy was clearly pleased with himself, convinced his plan had been a success.
I was left at a loss for words. “Mr. Norman, what do I do if your mom comes after me?”
Tell her the
truth. Make her so mad she’ll want to come after me instead.”
I was confused.
“Just say you’re not involved with me, that I’m the one chasing after you. Make her so angry she’ll want to come back and punch me. Sylvia, use that sharp tongue of yours. I know you can handle it.”
The call ended, but I could still hear the sound of his laughter echoing in the background
1 stared at the black screen of my phone, frustration bubbling up inside me. I thought, ‘How is it possible that someone like Jeremy even exists?‘ I was about to explode.
It took me the rest of the night to calm myself down. The next day was Monday, and I couldn’t afford to lose my focus. I pulled myself together and headed to the office, determined to start the week on a high note.
After a hectic morning of work, I was taking a sip of coffee when Sheila came in with some news. “The front desk says a lady is here and specifically asked to see you.”
A sense of foreboding washed over me, and I had a bad feeling about what was coming.
1 went downstairs and, sure enough, it was Neva.
I walked over with a polite smile and greeted her. “Hello, you must be Dr. Norman’s mother. I’m curious–what brings you here today?”
