Chapter 131
But she was anxious because, working under a leader like Austin–someone who was both incompetent and short–sighted–when would she ever get the chance to seize an opportunity!
As expected, just two days later, Austin’s team was harshly criticized by Ezekiel. That afternoon, Sheila came to find me, her eyes red.
She said. “Sylvia, could you help me?“
what looked up from a pile of documents. “What’s going on?”
“I know you handled a lot of the research for Rowland Group before, and you probably have backups, right? Could you let me take a look?” she
asked
Sheila nervously tugged at the corner of her mouth. “I know it’s asking a lot, but… it’s for the company. Sylvia, could you help me out?!”
If she’d just said she wanted to climb the ranks, I might have helped her.
But instead, she laid on a heavy compliment, and if 1 turned her down, it would look like I didn’t care about the company’s interests. If I agreed, I’d feel like I had swallowed a fly–completely disgusted.
I smiled. “How long have we been working together? This is your third year, right?”
Shell nodded
“From your very first day. I told you that project planning is personal. Even if the company wants to use it, it still needs the individual’s approval Especially between teams–we may all be in the same company, but we’re also competitors.”
Her face showed a hint of disdain. Clearly, my carlier indifference had started to wear on her patience. She was still too young–she couldn’t hide her feelings.
I continued calmly, “But since you’ve asked. I’ll give you a favor. The materials are on my computer. After my meeting, you can come copy them.”
When she heard that. Sheila looked like she was about to jump for joy. “Great! Thank you, Sylvial”
I left with the documents, but Holly grabbed me as I was heading out. “Are you crazy? Letting that sly little thing get near your computer?”
“If I wasn’t sure. I wouldn’t have done it, I gave her a reassuring smile. I’ve got it under control.
Holly sighed. “I feel like I’m going to get dragged down by Austin. The planning deadline’s next week, and the progress is pathetic.
“Just focus on your own part. Mr. Jacobson is no fool–he knows who’s right and who’s wrong”
Trac
Since Sheila got her hands on my materials, she had been thriving, in every meeting, she was singled out for praise. She became the star performer of the project team–hands down.
I didn’t attend those meetings, but Holly kept me updated
After another busy day. I had arranged to take Juno to the hospital for a check–up the next day.
I texted Dexter, asking him to come along. Although we were divorced, he was still Juno’s father, and it was his responsibility to accompany him to
the doctor
As I was heading downstairs, I spotted a disheveled man standing a little way off. It was Dexter. His eyes were locked on me–clearly, he was looking
for me.
I didn’t want to get into it with him in front of the building, so I walked over. “Let’s talk in the car
ded quickly.
Dexter nodded
In the car, I told him about the next day’s plan. “Nine am at the Children’s Hospital. Don’t be late. And bring some of Juno’s favorite snacks.”
“Okay. Dexter seemed a little distracted.
I stopped and looked at him. “What’s going on? Why did you want to talk?”
Dexter hesitated, looking uncomfortable. “Uh… Sylvia, could you lend me some money?”
For a second, I thought I had misheard him. I thought, ‘How could Dexter, living in such a fancy neighborhood, be out of money!
I snorted. “Did you blow all your cash on your mistress? Why are you asking me for a loan?”
“It’s not like that,” he said quickly, his voice urgent. “It’s my mom she’s gotten into trouble again!”
