I let out a cold laugh. That phone might be spotless, but I’m talking about the other one–the one hidden in the nightstand.”
Dexter froze, as if struck by lightning, staring at me in disbelief
I couldn’t help but take a little pleasure in his reaction. It was oddly satisfying to see him caught off guard.
Suddenly, he turned and began rifling through the nightstand, pulling out the pink phone with a cover. “You might have forgotten, but 1 haven’t.
“This was the one you bought for me when we were together!” He waved the phone at me. There’s nothing on it–no calls, no SIM card. If you don’t believe me, check it yourself.”
“You’ll need to go to the service center in person to verify it,” I pointed out.
“That’s not necessary, Dexter snapped, his temper flaring. “Just call customer service, and I’ll have them verify it over the phone
A few moments later, I was looking at the phone’s call history. As expected, it was completely empty. The last call was from me on the day I canceled my campus card.
I stood there, stunned, wondering, “How is this possible? Is Dexter really innocent? Then what about everything I’ve seen and discovered?”
I bit my lip, my frustration boiling over. I reached under the bed and pulled out the package I had received earlier, tossing it in his direction. “Then explain this!”
“It’s just a
a prank,” Dexter said, clearly offended. “You really think your husband is capable of something like that?”
“Then why did Miriam tell me she saw you with another woman, acting all lovey–dovey while on vacation with Truman?”
“Do you honestly believe Truman and his wife? He’s my work rival. Of course he’d try to mess with me! If our relationship isn’t stable, it affects my work. How am I supposed to compete with him under these conditions?”
Dexter took a step forward, his hands landing gently on my shoulders. “Sylvia, we’ve been through so much together. Can’t you trust me just a little more?”
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
This whole situation was just too strange. I didn’t have solid proof, yet Dexter was managing to clear his name with ease.
Something in me told me the truth wasn’t what he was saying. But still… I felt lost, like a sailor adrift in the ocean, unable to find my way.
“Fine,” I finally said. “Help me figure out who tried to run me over in the parking lot that day. I’ve got the license plate number.” 1 handed him a piece of paper with the alphanumeric code.
The day after the incident, I’d gone to check the security footage The car was nice–an imported Mercedes–Benz. Between the car, insurance, and license plates, it had to be worth over 300 thousand dollars.
Dexter didn’t have that kind of money, and I couldn’t imagine any wealthy young woman being interested in a married man with a child like him.

“Dexter,” I said, staring him down. “Don’t disappoint me. This is qur last chance.”
His eyes shifted slightly, but his voice was serious, “I won’t.”
He pulled me into his arms, and instinctively, I wanted to pull away. But I held back..
The next moment, his lips brushed the side of my ear as he leaned in for a kiss. This time, I moved away. “I’m not in the mood right now.
“Okay,” he said gently. “You go take a shower first. He let go of me, offering a warm, polite smile, just like always.
I grabbed some clothes and quickly stepped into the bathroom. Just as I turned on the shower, I realized I had forgotten my slippers. As I turned to open the door, I heard another voice in the room–it was Kimberly.
“How’s it going? Is she still making a scene, demanding a divorce Kimberly asked.
“No, Mom, keep your voice down,”
