I felt the scalding broth splatter onto my arm, and the pain made me jump up. “What the hell are you doing? Are you out of your mind?”

“Sylvia, how dare you say you’re not involved with another man? Am I wrong about you? Look at what you’re doing” Dexter glanced over at Jeremy and froze.
As he saw him clearly, it dawned on him–based purely on looks, Jeremy was miles ahead of him.

“Watch your mouth. What do you mean gigolo? Just because you have no proof, does that give you the right to throw accusations around? Dexter, I can’t believe you’re about to get a promotion to vice president. You really have no manners!” My temper flared, matching his.
It was lunchtime, and the restaurant was packed. The noise we were making caught everyone’s attention, and for a moment, the whole place fell silent.
Dexter grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward him. With his other hand, he clutched my collar so tightly I could barely breathe.
“Slut!” he spat, the foul stench of his words making me want to gag.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Martha had come back and rushed over to protect me.
When Dexter saw Martha, he froze for a second.
At that moment, Juno ran over, shouting, “Let go of my mom!”
Martha yelled, “Let go of her! Are you really thinking of laying a hand on Sylvia while I’m here? I thought I was wrong about you before, but now I see you’re rotten to the core. You’re bullying my daughter!”
“Mom…” Dexter finally let go of me.
I rubbed my aching neck and let out a cold laugh. “He thinks I’m out there looking for men behind his back.”
Dexter’s face twisted with rage. “Isn’t that exactly what you’re doing?”
“Have you ever seen someone bring their mom and kid out to ‘date‘ another man? Dexter, you’re the stupid one here. I’m not, though.
“Until I’ve completely ended things with you, I won’t do anything to ruin my reputation. You’re not worth it!” I mocked him, my anger turning to bitter laughter.
“You-
“Can I speak now?” Jeremy interrupted, his calm voice cutting through the tension.
He stood up slowly, unfazed. “Mr. Cook, I’m Dr. Norman, your mother–in–law’s attending physician. Nice to meet you.”
Dexter stared at him, completely stunned. His eyes widened, and for a moment, he was speechless.
It made sense. When Dexter had seen Jeremy earlier, he’d been wearing a mask. Plus, Martha was the one who was
hospitalized, not Kimberly, so he never really paid much attention to Jereiny. It wasn’t surprising he didn’t recognize him.

Jeremy continued. Tm here today having a meal with Ms. Moreno’s family for two reasons: first, to discuss compensation for the damage she accidentally caused to my car; second, to go over her mother’s next phase of treatment.”

“You didn’t know?” Jeremy’s voice grew colder. “And that’s why you barged in here, being rude and slandering me in front of all these people? Do you know how dangerous your words are!
“You’ve made accusations without understanding the situation, and now you’re putting us all at risk. How do you plan to make up for it?” Jeremy’s tone was cutting and unyielding.
“I–L…” Dexter stammered. “I’m really sorry, Dr. Norman. I didn’t recognize you.”
“So it looks like your previously devoted‘ son–in–law was just an act after all. Mr. Cook, if today’s incident causes me any trouble, I won’t hesitate to take legal action. You’d better be prepared.”
Dexter’s face instantly drained of color.
Jeremy turned to me. “Ms. Moreno, I think we should call it a day. When your mother’s next treatment phase begins, we’ll meet at the hospital.”
“Okay, thank you, Dr. Norman. I’m really sorry for the trouble today,” I said, feeling utterly ashamed.
