Chapter 66
“Did you get the subpoena?” I asked.
“Do you really want a divorce? Dexter finally calmed down. “Sylvia, after we divorce, you’ll be a woman who’s been married before and has a child. Who else would want you except me?”
“If that’s all you want to say, then sorry, I’m hanging up.”
“Wait!” Dexter panicked. “Can’t we just sit down and talk? Clear up all the misunderstandings?”
“There’s no misunderstanding. You had an affair, and you tried to kill me. Those are facts. Where’s the misunderstanding?” I sneered.
“The only difference is I don’t have the evidence to do anything about it right now. But I could have you locked up in a second,” I continued.
“Sylvia, I’m innocent. Do you really want Juno to grow up in a single parent home?”
“That’s still better than parents who can’t stand each other, or worse, if one day you actually succeed in getting rid of me,” I said coldly. Just make sure you show up for the hearing. If not, I’ll send the papers to your office next time.”
Dexter backed down. “So you just want a divorce? Fine… let’s talk face to face.”
“Sure, at the city hall.”
At the official office entrance, I wasn’t worried about Dexter trying anything.
The last time I went to the Hot Springs Resort, I’d been too trusting. I thought he wouldn’t do anything drastic in front of our child, but now looking back, I could kick myself.
Dexter had planned it all. After pushing me into the ravine, his every move was covered by cameras and hotel staff, making him look like the concerned husband. With an alibi, he walked free. Thankfully… I still had that button.
The priority now was to finalize the divorce and cut ties completely. That way, the damage to Juno would be minimized. Then, step by step, I’d gather all the evidence and make sure he paid for what he did.
So when Dexter suggested meeting to discuss the divorce, I didn’t turn him down. But this time, I’d be the one calling the shots on time and place.
After being discharged, I had already checked the rates for hiring bodyguards in Fairhaven. If necessary, I would bring two with me. Spending money on this would give me peace of mind.
Dexter hesitated. “You…”
“Stop stammering. My time is valuable. I’m not wasting it on you. Are you coming or not? If not, we’ll go to court. You already have the subpoena.”
Dexter said, “Fine, the city hall. When?”
“Tomorrow at 2:30 PM.
Once the time was set, I immediately hired two bodyguards.
The next afternoon, I met Dexter outside the city hall.
