Didn’t expect that. You really know how to go all out.” Suddenly, a voice came from behind me, making me jump. I turned around to see Jeremy standing there.
Immediately, I felt a wave of embarrassment. “You… saw all of that?”
“Yeah,” he said with a hint of admiration. “You’ve got guts and strategy, great execution and control. No wonder you’re capable enough to manage in a Fortune 500 company.”
I blushed, feeling awkward. “Dr. Norman, please don’t tease me. I was just letting off some steam…
I’m honestly relieved that you’ve finally noticed something’s wrong with your husband,” he said seriously.
“We’re already in the process of divorce. Please don’t refer to him like that–it makes me sick,” I reiterated. The thought of explaining this to family and friends in the future was already giving me a headache.
“I understand.” He nodded.
“Did you… know about Dexter earlier?” I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.
“Yes,” he replied. “The day your mother was in the hospital, he was downstairs parking. I happened to see him kissing a woman goodbye.
“Ten minutes later, he was in your mother’s hospital room, playing the role of the perfect husband–sorry, I didn’t mean to refer to him like that.”
I was speechless. “It’s fine.”
I thought, ‘So, behind my back, Dexter and Rhea have been seeing each other for who knows how long. I have been completely oblivious.”
I closed my eyes for a moment, thinking of Juno’s condition, and quickly asked, “Dr. Norman, do you know any renowned pediatric cardiologists? I’m lacking connections in this field, and I could really use your help.*
Jeremy’s expression softened. “Is the little one sick?”
I nodded, briefly telling him the bad news I had just received.
Jeremy said, “Send me the medical records and reports. I’ll ask my colleagues to take a look for you.”
“Thank you so much!” I said, feeling a sense of relief.
We exchanged WhatsApp IDs, and once I was home, I immediately sent him the medical reports for Juno.
Jeremy: (Okay, I’ll get back to you once I’ve got the info.]
For the first time in days, I felt some peace.
Juno was still so young. The doctors had said we could wait for his condition to stabilize before considering surgery, which would likely be in about six months. That gave me time to prepare, including arranging for blood donations.
Just after dinner, Dexter called. “Did you hit Leah?”

“You hit Rhea, didn’t you?”
“Yes, and what of it? Shouldn’t she have been slapped?”
Dexter paused for a moment. “You hit her because you still care about me. If that’s the case, why insist on getting a divorce?
“Why make things so final? I admit I acted impulsively, but it was because you kept pushing me. I just wanted to teach you at lesson, not end your life.”
I froze, my breath caught in my throat. I looked down at my phone, double–checking. Yes, I had been recording.
“I hit her not because of you, but for other reasons. Are you free tomorrow? We need to talk about Juno.”
Dexter was silent for a few seconds. “You’re not going to hit me, are you?”
“If you’re worried, we can meet at the police station,” I said with a mock laugh. “I just found a new restaurant nearby. Let’s
meet there.”
The next day, I met Dexter.
The new restaurant turned out to be a small, humble spot–barely more than a hole–in–the–wall.
The people here were enjoying simple, tasty meals, and even workers from the building across the street were coming over to grab lunch. Seeing their uniforms gave me a strange sense of security.
Dexter hadn’t expected me to choose this place. His brow furrowed. “What’s this about? I’m not agreeing to a divorce.
“You’ve already kicked me and Kimberly out, and now you’ve gotten me suspended from my job. I’m not going to let you get your way.”
I didn’t bother responding. I simply shoved a copy of Juno’s medical records across the table at him. “Read it yourself.” Dexter flipped through the papers quickly, his face changing dramatically. “Juno… is sick?”
