Chapter 81
Who would want to do this? You have no idea how many nights I’ve dreamed of killing him! But he’s Juno’s father. This is the deal Dexter made to help Juno.”
Holly was furious. “What a bastard. Juno’s his son too! Why the hell is he using your child to blackmail you?!
I gave a bitter, hollow laugh. “Because I care more about Juno, and he… already has another son out there”
Holly stared at me, wordless.
I was drenched in alcohol, my makeup was smeared, and my hair was a mess. I looked like a total wreck.
“Come here,” she said with a deep breath. “Let me fix your makeup”
“You were just about to strangle me a second ago, I managed to laugh through my tears.
“Of course I was mad! But… I’m a mother too. I’d do the same for my daughter.”
She pulled out her makeup kit. “Hurry up, even though I’m disgusted, let’s just get this over with. The fewer times you have to do this, the better.”
Her words snapped me back to reality. She was right. If I was going to keep humiliating myself, it should be the last time
1 pulled myself together, let her touch up my makeup, fixed my hair, straightened my dress, and sprayed on some perfume to get rid of the alcohol stench.
Holly whispered in my ear, “Helping him get his job back is fine, but… there’s something you need to know. Mr. Macdonald is a slippery character. He likes to hang around women, if you get my meaning”
A heavy feeling settled in my chest, and I nodded grimly
When we returned to the private room, Wilbur greeted us with a teasing smile. “You two were gone so long, I thought you didn’t like us men and had slipped away without us.”
“Of course not, Mr. Macdonald,” I replied, smiling. “We just had a little chat, girl talk.”
Wilbur narrowed his eyes. “What kind of talk is so private I can’t hear? Come on, spill the beans, we’ll all enjoy it
I deflected smoothly. “You’re a big shot, Mr. Macdonald. You don’t want to waste your time on petty stuff like that. Come on let’s drink,”
Holly joined in quickly. “Eat, eat!”
After I’d thrown up and had the hangover pill Holly gave me, I felt much clearer. I decided, as soon as dinner was over, I was out of there.
An hour later, most people were half–drunk. The secretary stepped out to pay the bill, and I took the chance to slip away As I was heading down the hall, Dexter caught up to me. “Thank you so much for tonight.”
“No need to thank me. It’s just business,” I said, watching him coolly. “How’s the situation with your family’s contacts”
“I called my cousins yesterday,” he said. “They said everything’s fine, they’ll help if needed. Don’t worry. Juno is my son. I can’t just let anything happen to him.”

Chapter 81
His words were so heartfelt. Too bad, they only moved him. I felt nothing inside
“When will we know for sure about the list?” I asked,
I…
“Once … officially go back to work. I think Mr. Macdonald seemed pretty satisfied tonight. It should be long just war a little longer.”
I bit back my disgust and nodded.
As I tumed to leave, he asked again. “Where are you staying?
“That’s none of your business?
“Sylvia, we were once husband and wife. Are you really going to be this cold–hearted?”
“It wasn’t me who was cold–hearted, it was you,” I said, not looking back. “Dexter, you’re the one who ruined our relating You hurt me first. Don’t think you can smooth things over with a few sweet words. I’m not like your other women
I quickly got into the car and called for a designated driver. While I was waiting, someone knocked on my window. It was
Wilbur
I rolled down the window quickly. “Mr. Macdonald, why are you still here? The dinner’s over. It’s getting late, you should head home
“Sylvia, I just wanted to talk to you for a minute, about Dexter,” he said, his gaze turning suggestive. It made me feel completely uncomfortable.
1 forced a smile. “Dexter and I are both young. We tend to act impulsively. I’m sorry for causing trouble for the company and the leadership.”
“I’m glad you understand,” he said, leaning in closer. His breath smelled strongly of alcohol as he got too close, practically pressing his body against mine. His eyes roamed over me, lingering too long on my chest.
