Seafood, something light. Jeremy replied, without hesitation, listing a few restaurants in Fairhaven that he disliked, before adding. “Anything but these places. Let me know when you settle on a time. And make sure to tell me a day in advance.”
“Alright…” I replied, somewhat dazed.
After sending Jeremy off. Ezekiel elbowed me. “Are you sure there’s nothing going on between you two?”
I snapped. “I just finalized my divorce today, and you’re asking me about an affair? Dr. Norman is my physician. He performed surgery on her.”

Ezekiel immediately dropped his nosy demeanor. “Alright, alright, I’ll leave the meal arrangements to you. Just make sure not to skimp on it. We don’t want to embarrass ourselves in front of someone who’s seen it all.”
I nodded absentmindedly. “Okay.”
My emotions were a mess. I’d just cut ties with Dexter, and now here was Jeremy complicating things.
I paused, then let out a self–deprecating laugh. “Sylvia, what’s wrong with you? He hasn’t said anything. Stop overthinking it
I thought Dexter and I would wait until the weekend to meet, but instead, he called that very evening. He asked if I could come over because Wilbur wanted to see me.
His voice on the phone sounded desperate, almost pleading. “Mr. Macdonald doesn’t know we’ve already finalized the divorce. Please, don’t let it slip, okay?
“Sylvia, I know this puts you in an awkward position, but Mr. Macdonald insists on seeing you. He wants to see if we’ve reconciled. Please, just play along, alright?”
I felt a cold, hollow sensation in my chest. Even after everything, Dexter still hadn’t let go. I knew exactly what Wilbur was after he was just trying to trap me.
I let out a dry laugh. “Of course, I understand. I’m not that heartless. Just send me the address, and I’ll be there soon.”
Dexter sounded relieved. “Sylvia, you’re the best.”
“Watch your tone,” I said, keeping my voice firm. “I don’t want to get caught in your mess with your wife. Don’t forget, we have no ties anymore.”
There was a brief silence before Dexter answered, “I understand, Ms. Moreno.”
I hung up, then went to take a shower. Afterward, I checked the time–it was almost time to go.
I sent Dexter a voice message, deliberately sounding rushed. (Sorry, Dexter, Martha isn’t feeling well, so I need to take her to the hospital. Can you explain to Mr. Macdonald for me?]
After sending the message, I turned off my phone. I had a peaceful night’s sleep, and the next morning, I confirmed the restaurant reservations for the weekend.
It seemed like luck had turned in my favor post–divorce–l even managed to grab two discount coupons, which felt like a
win.
I decided to schedule both dinners at the same restaurant, one in the evening and one for lunch the next day. After handling all the arrangements, I finally sat down to breakfast, checking my phone as I ate.

My phone buzzed repeatedly before settling down. Looking at it, I saw a series of messages from Dexter. I couldn’t help but smile. I did’t bother replying–just set the phone aside, completely ignoring them.
That was just how I was. Once I’d cut ties, I could be colder and more ruthless than anyone. If it weren’t for Juno, I wouldn’t have even bothered to read those messages
After breakfast, I left with Clara. I drove her to work; her office was just across the street from mine.
As she got out of the car, someone suddenly appeared from the side of the road, giving me a shock. It was Dexter. His eyes were bloodshot, and his face was covered in stubble. I almost didn’t recognize him.
He rushed up to my car window, hanging on it. “Sylvia! Come out, I need to talk to you!”
