The people around us were all listening closely, their eyes glued to us–especially on me.

I sneered, “Honestly, I don’t quite understand why Mr. Macdonald is so eager to invite his subordinates‘ wives to dinner. Is there some business angle I’m missing?”
Wilbur froze, his round face shifting between expressions. He forced a smile, tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Mrs. Cook, I think you’ve misunderstood. Dexter must have miscommunicated my intentions. I just wanted to invite you both to dinner.”
“Oh, I see. I brightened my smile on purpose. “I thought Mr. Macdonald was a reasonable boss–there’s no way you’d hold it against Dexter because of me. As for withholding the project from him. I’m sure that’s just a misunderstanding, right?”
Wilbur’s smile faltered.
Dexter rushed toward me, seething. “Sylvia… Stop talking!”
“Strange,” I said, feigning surprise. “Wasn’t it you who asked me to come here and explain things to Mr. Macdonald? Do you really think I have nothing better to do on a workday morning than show up at your company to discuss these trivial
maiters?”
I mocked, “Mr. Macdonald is a wise man, surely not the type to get hung up over something so small. Isn’t that right?”
Wilbur hurriedly nodded, trying to save face. “Exactly, Mrs. Cook, you have such a keen eye.”
“Mr. Macdonald, I’m afraid I must apologize–I’ve already finalized my divorce with Dexter. I’m no longer Mrs. Cook. Honestly, after everything, I still hope he finds his own happiness. Parting amicably is what adults do with dignity.”
As soon as I said this, Wilbur’s eyes went wide. The next moment, he couldn’t help but glance at Dexter.
Dexter, completely blindsided, was frozen in shock.
I went on, “Since there’s nothing else, I’ll head back to the office now. Mr. Macdonald, I wish you all the best–may your deals go smoothly. If any opportunities arise in the future, I’d love to collaborate.”
Wilbur finally found his composure and smiled politely. “Of course, of course.”
As I turned to leave, Dexter shot me a look that could’ve burned a hole through me.
Just before I took a step, I suddenly remembered something and turned back to Dexter. “Oh, by the way, please keep an eye on our son’s condition. And have your relatives come over this weekend to help out. Thanks.”
Dexter gritted his teeth. “L… I’ll take care of it…
With that, I left and drove back to the office.
I’d only just arrived when a message from Dexter popped up. [Sylvia, are you really going to go all the way with this?]
1: [Stop trying to blame me. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to. Let me remind you, the one who’s meeting Mr. Macdonald’s needs right now isn’t me–it’s Rhea.]
I: [Because she’s your wife now. Don’t forget that.)
After sending those messages, I threw myself into work.

By bringing up the divorce and Juno’s illness in front of everyone, I knew I’d put Dexter in a tough spot. He cared too much about his image to make light of Juno’s condition.
He knew I’d do anything for Juno–unless, of course, he was willing to risk losing this job he had barely managed to hold
onto.
Another busy day passed, and by evening. I rushed out of the office.

Clara answered, “Sylvia, I’m not coming home for dinner tonight. I’ve got a work event.”
“What kind of event does an intern like you need to go to?” I asked.
“It’s for our department–kind of a team–building thing. I think we’ve got a big client visiting.” Clara said excitedly. “Sylvia, I’ve got to go now, I’m getting in the car.
“Is Clara not coming home for dinner? Martha asked with concern.
