Chapter 28

Serena froze in place, her mind reeling from Mrs. Elita’s words Whwhat did you say?She stammered

He woke up one night, suddenly, without any special treatment Mrs. Elita said, her brow furrowed with concern. People in his conditionthose in a vegetative statethere’s no other treatment for them.”

Serena grabbed Mrs. Elita’s arm, panic rising in her chest. But Dr. Ziegler said your husband woke up because of a new treatment plan he was using! She almost shouted

Mrs. Elita shook her head and replied, I think he made a mistake”

Then, as if recalling something, she added, I remember that about a month before my husband woke up. Dr. Ziegler did mention this treatment plan to me.”

But the plan wasit approved by the Faliden Medical Association, she continued, her voice tense. No hospital can use it on patients. And it wasn’t even humantested

I only found out about it after asking around. Dr. Ziegler quickly backpedaled, saying he was just telling me about it, but that he didn’t mean for my husband to be a test subject.”

Serena was speechless, her mind struggling to process what she had just heard

Ms. Murry? Are you okay?Mrs. Elita called her name, but she stood frozen, unable to hear or see anything around her. The world felt as if it had shifted beneath her feet

Eventually, a man bumped into her, and she stumbled, crashing to the ground. The warmth and hope that had filled her heart earlier seemed to vanish, replaced by a stark, cold reality. Tears welled up in her eyes, streaming down her cheeks

A nurse approached her, concern evident in her voice. Miss, are you alright?”

Serena scrambled to her feet, wiping away her tears. I’m fine,” she muttered, her voice shaky

She didn’t know how she ended up walking through the hospital garden, her feet carrying her to a bench. Sitting down, she clutched the file on the socalled new treatment plan, feeling an overwhelming sense of helplessness

The treatment plan, once a potential lifeline for Jonathan, now seemed like a cruel illusiona dead end she couldn’t escape

Now she realized the truth. Dr. Ziegler’s proposal for patients in a vegetative state had been rejected by the medical association over a year ago. And yet, he had been secretly searching for suitable living patients for clinical trials

Jonathan, still in a coma, had become the perfect target

This is ridiculous. Thought Serena. Dr. Ziegler lacked the funds to proceed, so he had been trying to swindle a million from me for the experimental treatment

Serena collapsed into the bench, overwhelmed by the weight of all. The treatment plan was extreme, and it carried a high risk of death. She knew she had almost unknowingly put her brother in danger

She sat there until night fell. After regaining some strength, she finally returned to the hospital to confront Dr. Ziegler and buy herself some time, delaying the treatment plan as much as possible

Though Dr. Ziegler didn’t say much, it was clear from his face that he wasn’t happy with her hesitation. His attitude turned cold

Serena understoodHe had finally found a patient in Jonathan, and he wasn’t going to give up so easily. If she confronted him now with evidence, Jonathan could be at risk

Chapter 29

I need to get Jonathan transferred to another hospital, fast, She told herself, hoping this wasn’t her last chance

She waited in the hotel for Andrew, her thoughts restless as the hours dragged on. When he finally returned at 3 am, he looked exhausted, his steps unsteady, clearly weighed down by the alcohol. But Serena couldn’t afford to wait any longer

She watched quietly as Rhett helped Andrew tobed, hesitating for a moment and gathering her thoughts. She wasn’t sure how to bring it up, but it had to be done. She needed to speak up now

Andrew, I need to talk to you.She managed to find her voice. s urgent, can you just….

But before she could continue, Rhett cut her off. Mr. White is tired. He’s been working nonstop. He shot her a cold look, He’s already promised to cover the treatment fees, so don’t bother him with these small matters.”

Serena left Andrew’s room, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts. She knew Jonathan’s situation was far from trivialevery moment felt heavier than the last

She couldn’t sleep that night, poring over more details about the new treatment plan. The only information she could find was about two cases from ten years agoboth patients had died after undergoing similar procedures

Andrew, who trusted Dr. Ziegler completely, believed in the treatment. He even supported it. But Serena couldn’t afford to take any risks with Jonathan’s life

She stayed up all night, her mind focused and her hands steady despite the exhaustion creeping in. For hours. Serena combed through the documents, piecing together the evidence of Dr. Ziegler’s illegal conduct

The facts were undeniable. All the lies, the falsified reports, and the unethical treatment planit was all there, laid bare before her

All that was left was to submit the evidence to the hospital’s medical department. She had to ensure the truth came to light before it was too late

With her evidence, she was lucky enough to have the hospital agreed to transfer Jonathan to a new doctor. While the new doctor wasn’t as skilled as Dr. Ziegler, at least Jonathan was safe for now

The chaos seemed to settle for now. After meeting with the new doctor, Serena sat by Jonathan’s bedside, holding his hand She was thinking about how to explain everything to Andrew when suddenly, the door to the room burst open

Ms. Murry, I have been trying to help you and your brother, but you reported me to the hospital?” Dr. Ziegler’s voice was thick with anger as he strode toward the bed, his eyes dark and menacing, Serena stood quickly, her heart racing

It was you who lied to me first, she retorted. You didn’t have any real success with the new treatment plan.”

But Dr. Ziegler wasn’t fazed. He sneered, And what if your brother wakes up because of the treatment? What if it works?”

No.Serena shook her head firmly. I won’t risk it”

She knew that the treatment was far too dangerous, and she couldn’t allow Jonathan to fall into Dr. Ziegler’s hands again. Dr. Ziegler had fabricated numerous case studies and even hired actors to deceive her

Then why report me?Dr. Ziegler spat. You know what this could do to my career

That’s your problem, not mine, Serena replied coolly, her voice unwavering despite the tension in the room. Her only goal was to get Jonathan transferred to a safer treatment plan, and she was determined to ensure his safety.

Dr. Ziegler fell silent for a moment, then chuckled darkly. Fine underestimated you,” he murmured before turning and walking out of the room. We’ll see, Ms. Murry

Serena let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. She stayed by Jonathan’s side until the sun began to set, then slowly made her way out of the room

Jonathan will be okay. She told herself, and decided to put the pleasant encounter with Dr. Ziegler behind her for now

The hallway lights were dim, casting long shadows as she walked toward the exit, her mind still whirling with everything that had happened

However, as she passed by a hospital room, someone suddenly Hinged out from behind the door. Before she could react, a hand covered her mouth, and everything went black
