After the new business took off, I found myself constantly flying overseas to visit factories and manage operations.
My father arranged for a new assistant, Lance Mitchell, a fresh college graduate. He was tall, full of energy, and always cheerful,
Lance accompanied me on these whirlwind business trips, and as the company grew and faced countless challenges, I quickly saw how capable he was at handling everything. In time, we developed a friendship.
One day, he casually asked, “Selene, I heard you’re getting a divorce? What’s going on?”

“No big deal. I just don’t feel the same anymore.”
Lance raised an eyebrow, then grinned. “So, what do you like now?”

I looked at his youthful, handsome face, and smiled slightly, not wanting to entertain the conversation any further.
A few months later, I returned to the country for an industry summit.
It was a reunion of sorts with old partners, and we chatted about how everyone had been doing.
The conversation inevitably turned to my former company.
They all had a lot to say about Lucian’s company, shaking their heads. After I left, the whole thing seemed to fall apart. There was no one to manage the business divisions, and everything was a mess. On top of that, I heard their finances were in pretty rough shape.
I just smiled politely, not wanting to get into the mess.
At the evening banquet after the conference, I ran into Lucian again. He immediately latched onto me, trying to talk despite my clear reluctance.
“Selene, listen, I made a mistake. I can’t live without you. Please come back.”
I held up my hand, cutting him off. “Mr. Blake, it’s over between us. Please don’t keep dragging this out.”
“No, I still love you. I’ve broken up with Marina for good. I swear, I’ll listen to you now. Please, just come back.”
I let out a bitter laugh, shaking my head as I pulled away from him.
But before I could walk away, someone threw a glass of red wine at me.
I blinked in surprise, staring at the person who had just drenched me. It was actually Marina.
She stormed up to me, her voice loud enough for the whole room to hear. “Selene, you keep talking about divorce, but why do you keep hanging around him?”
Everyone turned their heads toward us.
I calmly wiped the wine off my face with a napkin. “Marina, just so you know, it’s your husband who’s been coming after me.”
But Marina wasn’t done. She shouted from behind me, “Don’t act all innocent. You’re just playing some game, trying to make him chase you. It’s pathetic.”
“Whether I’m pathetic or not isn’t up for discussion. What I want to know is, when are you going to pay back the money you owe me? This gown costs 1.2 million. You ruined it in front of all these cameras, so don’t think you can get away with it. My lawyer will be in touch to recover the cost.”
Marina, furious, lunged at me like she was going to slap me, but before she could, someone stepped in and struck her hard across the face.
I turned around and saw Lucian seething. “Marina! Get the hell away from her!”
Marina covered her face, crying, “Lucian, this is how you treat me? Fine, I’m leaving. But don’t come crying to me later!”
Lucian made another move toward me, but I shoved him back with force. I was done with him.
“Lucian, I don’t care what you take or don’t take. Just sign the divorce papers. Even if you don’t sign, my lawyer will file the papers for you. I have plenty of proof of your affairs. I’ll bring everything to court, and then we’ll see who looks bad.”
With that, I turned on my heel and walked out, leaving the stunned guests behind.
