I stared at William, feeling both surprised and a bit guilty. “So, you saw everything?”
“Yes.”
Ethan, noticing the closeness between us, got up from the ground, eyes red and demanded, “Who is he?”
William seemed intent on provoking him, as he tightened his arm around my waist. “Her… fiancé.”
“Lies! Let go of her! Emma, he’s lying, right? You‘ re just doing this to make me jealous, aren’t you?”
“Oh, the audacity…” came my brother‘ s voice from behind us, making Ethan step back instinctively.
William and I turned to see my brother approaching, a baseball bat resting on hist shoulder.
I moved to stop him, but William guided

me aside with his arm around my waist.
“What are you doing? My brother can be brutal!”
William chuckled, “Don’t worry. I’m here; he won’t go too far.” As he spoke, he took out his phone and made a quick call. “In front of Emma family’s house. Send an ambulance to standby.”
I was speechless.
Ethan’s face hardened as he looked from my brother back to me. “Emma, we haven’t broken up yet, have we? Our relationship isn‘ t over. You can’t marry someone else. Even if he is your fiancé, you should call off the engagement.”
My brother smirked coldly and, without hesitation, swung the bat at Ethan’s leg. Ethan screamed, collapsing onto the ground.
“I’ve been listening outside. It’s bad enough you lied to my sister, but you dare lay a hand on her, Ethan? Don’t ever call

With that, he struck again, eliciting
another groan from Ethan, who, despite the pain, kept his eyes fixed on me, trying to crawl closer.
“Enough, Brother, stop,” I said firmly.
My brother paused mid–swing.
Ethan laughed weakly. “See, you still care about me, Emma. You can‘ t just let go, can you?”
I pried on myself free from William’s grip, walked over to Ethan and crouched down in front of him. Then, without hesitation, I slapped him hard across the face.
“This slap repays the debt. We’re even
now.”
“As for your claim that I never officially broke up with you, well, I didn’t think it was necessary. You never acknowledged me as your girlfriend in the first place. What was there to end?”

“Let me be clear, Ethan–I don‘ t love you anymore. Don’t come looking for me again.”
With that, I grabbed my brother‘ s arm and began pulling him back toward the house.
He resisted. “You really want to get a manslaughter charge for this kind of man?” I snapped, stamping my foot.
Grinding his teeth, my brother threw down the bat, but not before crouching over Ethan one last time and landing a few solid punches to his face.
Once he’d had his fill, William signaled the waiting ambulance and four medics quickly arrived with a stretcher to take Ethan away.
As we turned to head back inside, Ethan suddenly shouted at William, “I was with her for seven years. Don’t you find it revolting to marry her?”

He walked over, placed his foot on Ethan‘ s injured leg and pressed down hard.
“You‘ re a disgrace to men. Don’t worry -I’ll make sure you watch her live a life so happy you’ll be green with envy.”
Then he looked up at the medics and said,
“Take him.”
Once Ethan was out of sight, William turned back, gently taking my hand in his.
“Let’s skip going back inside. I’ll take you shopping,” he said with a calm smile.
I blinked, stunned. After everything that had just happened, he didn’t ask any questions or say anything else–just wanted to take me shopping?
